Huskies rollover Carson City Senators in the first round of playoffs
It was the opening round of playoff action Tuesday for the Carson High Senators up against the Reno Huskies. Reno came in as the heavy favorite with an impressive 21-1 record versus Carson’s 10-12 record.
Things took a slow start for the Carson City offense going one, two, and three to start the game. Reno, however, took no time warming up after scoring two runs in the bottom of the first after a couple of base hits, a wild pitch and an error by Carson’s center fielder TJ Thomson.
Things wouldn't pick up offensively for Carson in the top of two either. Dominic Norton knocked a single and stole a base, but he would be stranded after another offensive drought. Reno would go right back to work picking up two more runs on an error by short stop Gehrig Tucker, and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to pick up their forth run of the game putting them up 4-0 in the top of three.
Carson still wouldn't do anything too impressive with that bat after a walk, two strike outs and a fly to center. Reno, on the other hand, would continue to put some points on the board as expected. After an absolute shot to left field for a double, a single, a stolen base, and sac fly to center to further the blow out at 5-0.
The Senators of Carson City just couldn't seem to get anything going offensively except for a booming double to left by Zampirro, but three consecutive ground outs would leave him stranded there. The Reno Huskies home game would finally put a halt to their offensive rampage after a single to left and walk, but with a ground ball to third and an excellent heads up play to turn two from a line drive the inning would end.
Finally Carson would get put on the board. After a series of hits, including a very well-played hit and run, to put the runners in scoring position, Carson would at last score off of a wild pitch.
The score coming into the bottom of five was 5-1, but as advertised the Huskies offense wouldn't allow for another scoreless inning. After an infield single to deep second base, they would compound the hit with a beautiful double just fair down the third base line to pick up their sixth run.
Carson would step up to the plate only to come up short offensively yet again after a single to right, but nothing to build off of it with. The Senators would leave yet another runner in scoring position stranded.
Just as you might expect yet again, the Huskies continued to roll offensively. This time it was a single to left which was followed by a shot to dead center straight off the fence to score the runner form first. After a couple of pop outs the Huskies would a couple runners on as well.
The deficit was 7-1 coming into the top of seven and Carson would fail to complete the comeback. After their most offensively productive inning which included: three hits, a couple of fielder’s choices, excellent base running and two runs, but the Huskies would just prove too much for the Senators. Final score of this one: Huskies 7, Carson 3.
