A robbery at a north Carson City convenience store early Thursday morning ended when the suspect jumped inside a Carson City sheriff’s patrol car, fought with a deputy inside the car, rammed the car into a second patrol car and then plowed through a fence into an apartment building storage unit.
A deputy is being treated for minor injuries while the suspect apparently cut his wrists sometime during the melee and was flown by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The strong armed robbery happened at around 3:15 a.m. at the north Carson Street 7-Eleven. The clerk reported a man walked in with an air gun and demanded alcohol. He filled a bag with bottles of liquor and then took off running into an apartment complex at 20 College Parkway, said Furlong.
Responding deputies arrived at the scene. A deputy spotted the suspect and began a foot chase, said Furlong. The suspect then ran around the deputy and jumped into the driver’s side of the patrol vehicle.
The deputy got into the passenger’s side and began fighting with the suspect inside the patrol car, said Furlong. The suspect then floored the accelerator, slamming the car into a second patrol car, in which a deputy was outside the vehicle and jumped out of the way to avoid being hit.
"He put it into drive and floored it, driving straight into the fence and into the wall," said Furlong. "The suspect was bleeding from the wrists, cutting himself at some point during this."
The suspect continued to floor the patrol vehicle accelerator, crossing Silver Oak Drive, going through a fence and plowing into storage units at the Dolphin Bay apartment complex.
The suspect was bleeding from the wrists at the time officers were able to detain him, said Furlong. Carson City Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and treated the suspect, determining his injuries were significant enough to be taken by Care Flight. His name has not been released and his condition is unknown at this time.
The deputy who fought with the suspect in the patrol car went to Carson Tahoe Hospital for evaluation, said Furlong.
Carson City sheriff's detectives and the Nevada Highway Patrol are investigating, said Furlong.
