Carson City Sheriff: Robbery suspect jailed for sexual assault, child pornography
A 27-year-old Carson City man identified as the person who allegedly robbed a Carson City convenience store early Thursday morning then jumped into a patrol car, crashing it and another police vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of multiple felony sexual assault and child pornography charges, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
Nathan Oakie, 27, is facing multiple felony charges including sexual assault, possession of visual pornography of a child, use/permit Minor in the production of child pornography, lewdness with a child under 14, armed robbery, grand larceny auto, resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer with a deadly weapon. Bail has been set at $1,000,000.
At 3:15 a.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported armed robbery with a gun at the 7-Eleven convenience store on North Carson Street.
The area surrounding the store was immediately searched by officers, where the suspect was believed to be in hiding. Deputies encountered the suspect and attempted to detain him. At the approximate same time, it is believed that the suspect inflicted a severe wound to his wrist with his own knife, said Furlong.
Deputies struggled with the suspect at a patrol vehicle, but he was able to gain access to the driver’s area of the patrol car and attempted to flee by taking the car.
One deputy sheriff who had been pulling on the suspect to remove him from the vehicle was pulled into the car as it accelerated, and the scuffle continued. The suspect accelerated the patrol car down an alley, striking a second patrol car and narrowly missing a second Deputy on scene, said Furlong.
The suspect continued to accelerate out of the alley, through an iron fence and into an apartment storage garage. As additional support arrived at the scene, the suspect was forcefully removed from the car, though he continued to resist, even throughout medical aid by Carson City fire and rescue personnel.
While detectives were investigating the incident, it became known that Oakie was contacted on Wednesday, May 11 and questioned regarding an anonymous tip received that he had sexually assaulted a minor. At the time of the interview, there was insufficient information to take him into custody. Evidence was collected to warrant an arrest, said Furlong.
Nathan Oakie was transported to Renown Medical Center by Care Flight for treatment of his injuries. Once released from care, Oakie will be transported to the Carson City Jail for complete booking. One deputy sheriff was treated and released from Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. Both sheriff’s vehicles were severely damaged and not likely repairable. A K-9 (drug/tracking) in one of the vehicles was unharmed.
No injuries were reported at the convenience, and only alcohol was reported taken, said Furlong.
