Marielle Toll Among Spring Resident Artists in Silver City, Nevada
SILVER CITY, Nev. — Each year, the Resident Artist Program in Silver City hosts at least one emerging artist, in addition to hosting established artists. This year, Marielle Toll, a multi-talented emerging artist, was awarded a residency in the "emerging artists" category. At 18 she is already showing remarkable skill and talent in photography, illustration, and web site design.
Currently she's partnering with Danish writer Peter Krogh Andersen, one of the Program's previous Residents, to illustrate his short story, "The Beast."
She's also creating a new website for the Resident Artist Program. She has designed several other websites, including the Reno Nurturing Nest website.
During 2016, Marielle was the Program summer intern. She assisted and learned from internationally known photographer Frances Melhop, who was a Resident Arist in Silver City at the time, during a week long photo shoot. Marielle captured behind-the-scenes shots that have since been in shows and displays. In addition, she assisted the Resident Artist Program with a number of other projects, including photography projects, children's art events, installation of art work at art centers, etc.
What is the Resident Artist Program? Located in northwestern Nevada 3 miles from Virginia City and 29 miles from Lake Tahoe, Silver City is a small community on the Comstock within one of the nation's federally designated historic landmarks. The Resident Artist Program in Silver City is entering its fourth year. Those creating in the performing, visual, media, design, or literary arts are invited to apply to reside for up to 3 months at McCormick House, a geodesic dome designed in the 1970s by Nevada artist Jim McCormick. In exchange, visiting artists offer public performances, exhibitions, readings, workshops, etc. in Silver City and other northern Nevada communities. The Program provides a venue for those from other parts of the U.S. and the world to engage with people of the region through the arts. The Program is privately funded and directed by Theo McCormick and Quest Lakes.
Resident artists, including musicians, painters, fabricators, poets, photographers, and cultural researchers from New Zealand, Oregon, California, and Nevada have been scheduled through Winter of 2018. Contact Quest Lakes at P.O. Box 123, Silver City, Nevada 89428 for additional information.
Recently declared an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center," the community of Silver City is already home to a surprising number of Nevada's acclaimed artists, musicians, photographers, writers, artisans, academics and other innovative thinkers and unique souls.
Silver City's irreplaceable historic buildings and sites, and its crystal clear views of the Sierras, attract visiting plein air painters and photographers from around the West. With an unusually strong volunteerism ethos, the town boasts a volunteer-run library; an organic community garden; frequent public events at the community center, an outdoor stage and park; a busy arts group; a historic preservation group; a volunteer fire department; and an enviable free arts and science summer program for all ages.
