Two southern Nevada law officers memorialized Thursday at Capitol Mall in Carson City
Two Nevada law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty were recognized Thursday in a ceremony with their names added to a memorial on the Capitol Mall in Carson City.
The 22nd Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony paid tribute to Officer Kyle Lawrence Eng of the Las Vegas Department of Public Safety, Division of Corrections, who suffered a fatal heart attack on July 19, 2018 shortly after struggling with an inmate in the Las Vegas Detention Center.
Also, recognized was National Park Service Park Ranger James P. Fleetwood who died on July 5, 1977 when his vehicle was struck head-on by a drunk driver while en route to a July 4th parade detail in Searchlight, Nev.
Members of the Eng and Fleetwood families were present during Thursday's ceremony, which included more than 100 Police Honor Guard members from across the state, accompanied by a Pipe and Drum Corp, buglers, rifles teams and horse mounted officers.
The keynote address was given by Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak. The National Anthem and vocal presentation was made by the Carson High School Chamber Choir. The invocation was read by Memorial Chaplain Richard Snyder. Opening comments were made by organizer of the annual memorial, Richard Fletcher of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Speaking on behalf of Officer Eng was Nevada Public Safety Chief Michele Freeman of the Las Vegas Department of Public Safety, Corrections Division. Speaking on behalf of Park Ranger Fleetwood was Chief Adam Kelsey of the National Park Service.
There are now 134 Nevada Peace Officers who died in the line of duty. The first officer killed in the line of duty was Carson County Nevada Territory Sheriff John L. Blackburn, who was killed in 1861 while making an arrest.
In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.
