State troopers, public safety employees to participate in 2018 Polar Plunge Sunday
Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, as well as other employees for the Nevada Department of Public Safety will be participating in the South Lake Tahoe “Polar Plunge” on Sunday, March 18.
The annual Special Olympics fundraiser was scheduled to be held Saturday, March 17 on St. Patrick's Day. But inclement weather from a large winter storm system has forced its postponement to Sunday, March 18, the Special Olympics of Northern California and Nevada web site states.
Schedule of events remains the same, despite the change in days. Registration opens at 10 a.m. Sunday at Zephyr Cove, followed by a parade at 11:30 a.m. and then the 12 p.m. plunge into Lake Tahoe.
A post-splash bash rounds out the day's activities at 12:30 p.m. at the Mont Bleu Resort Casino in Stateline.
The purpose of the event is to help more than 24,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities succeed in life through sports.
Special Olympics Northern California and Nevada provides free year-round training and competitions, schools programs and critical health resources while working to create a more inclusive world for people of all abilities.
The theme this year is St. Patrick’s Day.
Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $125 each to take a dive into Lake Tahoe. Registration includes a Polar Plunge long-sleeve shirt and festivities such as contests, games, refreshments, and awards for top fundraisers and best costumes.
Additional fundraising is encouraged and will be rewarded with exclusive incentives.
