Sierra Nevada Forum to host March 13 discussion on Electoral College, national popular vote
The next Sierra Nevada Forum, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall at 511 West King Street, will feature a discussion about the Electoral College and the national popular vote.
The event will be moderated Jean Laird of the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada.
Guest speakers include Sondra Cosgrove, President of the League of Women Voters of Nevada, and Fred Lokken, political science instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College.
"Join us to discuss the history of the Electoral College, the mechanics — including the pros and cons — of the National Popular Vote movement, and what it would take for Nevada to sign on to the National Popular Vote compact," Cosgrove wrote.
As part of Wednesday's forum, political redistricting will also be discussed.
"The League of Women Voters, U.S. offers assistance to states interested in adopting independent redistricting commissions through ballot questions or legislation," Cosgrove said. "We’ll discuss the mechanics of such a commission and the process needed to adopt one in Nevada."
Cosgrove is a history professor at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. She has lived in Nevada for thirty-one years and she earned a Ph.D in U.S. Western History with emphasis in Native American and Latin American History from UNLV.
Through her membership in the League of Women Voters, Cosgrove works on issues related to voting, elections, and healthy community initiatives related to behavioral healthcare.
Lokken earned his B.S. in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, his master's degree at Washington State University and did doctoral work at the University of British Columbia.
He joined TMCC in 1991 as an instructor of political science and was tenured in 1995. Prior to joining TMCC, Lokken served as an instructor and assistant professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
