The first Monday of March should bring clearing skies and sunshine after a weekend of wild weather. Activities include a discussion and documentary viewing regarding the high cost of pharmaceutical drugs, plus Read Across America storytime for young children at the Carson City Library, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

Mary Liveratti, former president of AARP Nevada, will lead a discussion about the runaway cost of prescription drugs at Monday's Democratic luncheon. She will present the stunning documentary Big Pharma: Market Failure, which covers the pharmaceutical industry's role in the ever-spiraling cost of medicine.

From Wednesday onward it looks like plenty of sunshine filled days extending into the weekend.

Sierra Nevada Forums March presentation is a topic everyone in the Carson City area and throughout western Nevada should be considering: Are we prepared for a natural disaster like the one that happened in Paradise, Calif. last fall?

The League of Women Voters will host a number of election forums during the month of October at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall in Carson City.

Congratulations go out to the Mile High Jazz Band; they’ll be celebrating 17 years of monthly performances during tonight’s gig at Living the Good Life. If you’d like to learn more about drones, those little flying robots, then tonight’s installment of the Sierra Nevada Forum is for you. They’ll be covering the versatility of drones, and fully expect you to be surprised. Chili’s Restaurant welcomes Mother-son duos for a night of quality time. Super-hero costumes are encouraged, and bring a camera, Darth Vader will be there for pictures.

TUESDAY, April 10: Things to do in Carson City

The next Sierra Nevada Forum, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall at 511 West King Street, will feature a discussion about the Electoral College and the national popular vote.

This edition of It's Your City features Kathy Bartosz of Sierra Nevada Forums which will hold its next forum tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. The topic is immigration law.

Mark your calendar as Jan. 9, 2018 promises to be wild. Sierra Nevada Forums is pleased to present "Western Nevada Wildlife Through the Seasons." From raptors to mountain lions guests will share information you may not have known about wildlife and the region we live in.

To open his presentation at Tuesday night's Sierra Nevada Forum in Carson City, Lt. Ray Spencer shared the story of 14-year-old Amanda Todd. He showed a video she made and posted to her Youtube account.

This week's edition of It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features Kathy Bartosz, executive director of Partnership Carson City, a community-based coalition that focuses on the safety and health of citizens. Kathy and Cortney also discuss an upcoming Sierra Nevada Forum that focuses on volunteerism.

Voters can learn more about Question 2 regarding recreational marijuana on November’s ballot during the Sierra Nevada Forum on Tuesday at the Brewery Arts Center.

What to do on a Wednesday? Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Crossroads Lounge’s karaoke night. Listen to a presentation from Zeb Hogan, star of National Geographic’s Monster Fish. He’s this month’s Sierra Nevada Forum speaker at the Brewery Arts Center. Buffalo Wild Wings is hosting a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club today; a delicious fundraiser, at that. Let the jazz take you away at Living the Good Life or at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

Applebee’s is the place to be for dinner tonight if you want to help the 2015 Carson City Leadership Class raise funds for the children’s area of the Carson City Library. You do need to bring the flyer with you if you want Applebee's to donate a portion of your bill. Print it out or grab a copy at the Library’s youth desk.

Carson City has some great lectures going on today. Sierra Nevada Forums is presenting ‘Lions and Tracking and Bears, OH MY’ about the incredible animals in our foothills. ‘A Short History of Virginia City’ is to be found at the Nevada State Museum, followed by a book signing by Authors Ron and Susan James.

Sierra Nevada Forums brings 'Lions, Tracking, and Bears, OH MY: Amazing Creatures in Carson’s Backyard' to the Plaza Event Center, 211 E. Ninth St., Carson City, on Thursday, Jan. 21. Come join in the presentations by Dr. Alyson Andreasen and Carl Lackey as they discuss the behaviors of mountain lions and bears in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The forum begins promptly at 6 p.m. This is a free event, however, donations are always appreciated.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in conjunction with Sierra Nevada Forums and American Association of University Women, has announced a series of election forums to be held Sept. 22 through Sept. 30 in Carson City. The forums will present both candidates for races and ballot proposition questions that will be on the ballot for the general election on November 4. The public is invited to attend these forums, which will be held at the Carson City Community Center, Sierra Room. Doors open at 5:30 and the forum begins at 6:00 each evening.

Recently, I was quite amazed when I was introduced to the Sierra Nevada Forum, a group of local people who organize assemblies to inform the citizens of Carson City about important current issues. The amazing part is that the group finds experts in each field who respond to questions from the Forum and audience and are held firmly to fact-based responses.

The monthly meeting of the Carson City Democratic Women's Club will be held June 8th at Grandma Hatties Restaurant. If you arrive before noon, you may order off the menu.

The Program begins at noon and will consist of election of officers, dues payments, discussion of summer activities and compiling a list of questions to submit to the July 16 Sierra Nevada Forum concerning the renovation and cost of the City's waste water, sewer an water systems. Fees will be going up so let's get informed on what is going on!
