Baily Pond to reopen, water determined safe after iron bacteria identified at Fuji Park fish pond

Recently Baily Pond at Fuji Park in south Carson City was temporarily closed due to what appeared to be a natural occurring event, often found in marsh and wetland environments, was observed and reported in the water on Jan. 29.
As a precautionary measure and to ensure the health and safety of park users and wildlife, the pond was temporarily closed for water quality testing.
The results confirmed that the reddish or brownish slime material in the water and along the edge of the pond was indeed from iron bacteria. Iron bacteria presents no threat to human health. They are found naturally in soils and water in low numbers and thrive when iron becomes available. They do create an oily sheen, which comes from the decomposing bacteria cells, and is often mistaken for petroleum sheens.
Baily Pond will be open on Friday, March 9, from this temporary closure. The pond still may close from time to time weather pending. For questions please call David Navarro at 887-2262.
