Gov. Sandoval declares March 6-10 School Social Work Week in Nevada

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Gov. Brian Sandoval has issued a proclamation declaring the week of March 10 School Social Work Week in Nevada. The proclamation celebrates the progress that has been made since the creation of the Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment within the Nevada Department of Education.
“We have made tremendous strides in the state’s efforts to reduce bullying and enhance the development of a safe and respectful learning environment for all students since Gov. Sandoval announced the creation of the Social Workers in Schools block grant in 2015,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction.
The 2015 Legislature approved OSRLE to administer the $17 million block grant that supports statewide efforts focused on school climate and social and emotional learning. This effort has resulted in 227 Social Workers in Schools professionals serving 166 campuses across 11 school districts and seven charter academies in Nevada.
“OSRLE is home to federal grants that further support the mission of addressing the behavioral health needs of Nevada’s children and families,” said Christy McGill, OSRLE Director. “Working with partners in schools and communities across the state, OSRLE hopes to facilitate collaboration and innovation that will more effectively and efficiently support the comprehensive well-being of students in Nevada.”
Gov. Sandoval’s proclamation coincides with National School Social Work Week. With the theme of "Be the Change," school social workers across the country will highlight their critically important role in helping students every day to meet the academic, social, and emotional challenges on the road to becoming successful and productive young adults. Under the leadership of the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA), the only national organization exclusively dedicated to the profession of school social work, this celebration will emphasize school social work interventions that support students and families to meet these challenges.
