Fleet Reserve Association honors winners in patriotism essay contest
The Fleet Reserve Association, Sierra-Tahoe Branch and Unit 137 held its annual essay contest on Patriotism for Eighth to 12th grade.
A luncheon was held Saturday at the Veterans Hall in Carson City honoring the eight winners. Pictured clockwise from upper left are Grade 12:
First Place, Tristan Martel, Carson High School; Second Place, Cortez Berumen, Yerrington High School; Third Place, Joey Garcia, Carson High School. Grade 11: First Place Trinity Dickinson, Whittell High School; Second Place Cheyenne Zivkovic, Douglas High School. Grade 10: First Place, Makena Snipes, Whittell High School. Grade 8: Second Place, Leah Schemenaver, Carson Valley Middle School; First place Alana Jeffries Eagle Valley Middle School.
The Sierra-Tahoe Branch - 137 was founded in Minden, 1994. Since then the branch has been servicing the interests of members of the sea services living in and around the Greater Carson City Area. The branch actively supports various area activities that enhances the well being of the active and veteran enlisted members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard both nationally and within its service area.
A few of the recent Branch activities include providing financial support to Nevada Honor Flight, Suicide Prevention and each year sponsoring the Annual Americanism Essay Contest in area schools.
The Branch is a sponsor of the Carson City Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps providing both mentoring and financial assistasnce to the Corps. Recently the banch has established a working relationship with the Marine Corps Community Services at the Mountain Warfare Training Center at Pickle Meadows, Calif. As such, the Branch provides support for events and programs at the Center throughout the year.
The Branch was incorporated in 2014 as a Nevada non-profit corporation.
The Fleet Reserve Association is a non-profit organization chartered by the United States Congress that represents the interests of enlisted Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine veterans and active duty personnel in the United States.
The Fleet Reserve is the oldest and largest association representing enlisted Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel. Established in 1924, FRA's mission is to safeguard the pay, benefits, and entitlements of the active duty, reserve, and retired members of the Sea Services.
The FRA is the founding member and active participant in The Military Coalition, a group of 24 military associations supporting legislation that protects and/or enhances programs for military personnel. Collectively the TMC represents over 5 million active duty, reserve, retired, and veterans of the uniformed services.
Membership in the FRA is open to all enlisted personnel of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Commissioned Officers of the Sea Services that have at least one day of prior enlisted service are eligible to join.
