Sierra Lutheran High School and Fellowship of Christian Athletes raised over $2,000 to fund the delivery of 75 Christmas trees to the active personnel serving at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif., last week.

The Slink Fire behavior moderated Tuesday at 11,000 acres and hard work by firefighters has increased the containment to 10 percent. All evacuations in the towns of Walker and Coleville have been lifted and Highway 395 is now open to traffic, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

United States Marine Corps Captain (retired), Robert Paul Pier (Bob) left this life for eternity on Jan. 8, 2020 to be reunited with his Creator and his waiting wife, Ruth Jane Pier. Bob was born on August 10, 1931 in South Bend, Indiana as the youngest of nine children, Bob was 88 years old.

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States, will be sponsoring a special event on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020 to honor the 2019 Sailors and Marines of the Year assigned to Naval Air Station Fallon and Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, along with the Recruiter of the Year from Naval Recruiting District, Portland, assigned to the Reno Office.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! Christmas came early for the Marines of the Mountain Warfare Training Center in the Coleville, Bridgeport area of Mono County on Sunday as volunteers from Carson City area's Sierra Lutheran High School and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes delivered donated Christmas trees to the troops there.

CARSON CITY — Sierra Lutheran High School and Fellowship of Christian Athletes are partnering to cultivate support for Trees For the Troops, a local effort to generate funds to gift Christmas trees to active military at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif.

Events around the capital city Wednesday, Nov. 6 include gallery showings, a Veterans Day assembly at Sierra Lutheran High School, the first "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation, "Nevada’s Ancient Rock Art: Art for All Times" hosted by Capital City Arts Initiative, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate both the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays. Our speaker for the Special Veteran’s Day celebration will be Captain Evan Morrison, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Fallon.

CARSON CITY — Sierra Lutheran is inviting area veterans to attend a special Veterans Day assembly at the school on Wednesday, November 6, in the Norm Brauer Gymnasium from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m., as part of its annual “Remembering And Honoring Our Heroes.”

The Boot Fire, located in the eastern Sierra Mountains on the Bridgeport Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, was called 100 percent contained on Sept. 15.

Highway 395 and 108 continue to remain open for traffic as progress continues on the Boot Fire, which has burned 6,898 acres and is 39 percent contained as of Sunday morning.

Hot and windy conditions are creating extreme fire behavior on the Boot Fire that is burning nine miles southwest of Walker, California.

Highway 395 from Walker to Bridgeport and State Route 108 over Sonora Pass remain closed Thursday due to the Boot Fire, which remains out of control and burning along the Walker River northwest of Bridgeport in Mono County, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Wildfires burning around the region have contributed to deteriorating air quality Thursday morning with the Carson City area getting the brunt of smoke and haze that began to move in overnight, according to AirNow.Gov.

UPDATE 3:17PM: Road closures now span US 395 beginning at Holbrook Junction (north of Topaz Lake) to Bridgeport, and CA SR 108 is closed from US 395 to the Tuolumne County line. Evacuations have expanded from the Bootleg, Chris Flat and Sonora Bridge Campgrounds to now include the Leavitt Meadows Pack Station and Campground, the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

UPDATE 10:15AM: The Boot Fire in Mono County that forced the closure of Highway 395 on Tuesday afternoon continues to grow with a size of 3,000 acres and zero containment, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Lt. Col. Armold is a 20-year veteran of the Marine Corps with assignments to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
