Fishing report through Feb. 28

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra through Feb. 28:

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Brian Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service (539-283-4103) www.bigdaddyfishing.com reports:
What Storm?? It was all the talk of the local weather forecast but it never came to be. After a run of beautiful spring like days a one day storm was supposed to come in and bring some light snow and rain to Almanor. I can positively tell you we literally never saw a drop of either.
The winds did increase to around 10 mph and brought in a thick layer of clouds but that was about it, and by the end of our day yesterday it was broken cloud cover and partly sunny, about par for the course this winter.
The overnight clouds did hold in a little heat, making for a warmer start in the morning and also bringing up the surface temps about one degree to 40.
I have been splitting our time by taking advantage of the good winter bite along the east shore in the open water and working some of Almanor's shallows looking for signs of our spring bite to start.
We have been finding good numbers of mostly Bows from 2 to 3 pounds with a few bigger fish showing up fishing the open water along the east shore. The fish, for the most part, are obese footballs loaded with Pond Smelt. My top baits have been Arctic Fox Tube Flies as well as Pond Smelt imitation soft plastics fished in the top 10 feet of the water.
Working the shallows at various points around the lake has produced a 50/50 mix of Browns and Bows to 4 pounds.
It will be a week or two until this bite really takes off.
My weapon of choice for the shallows is the Trophy Stick.
The weather forecast is for another week of almost "spring like" weather, now is a great time to beat the crowds and get your shot at some great fish.
Coming up will be  Nor-Cal Boat, Sport, and RV show, March 2nd to 4th at the Shasta District Fairgrounds in Anderson.
Stop by the booth located in the Shasta Hall to see pictures and videos as well as get more information.
This year, as in years past, I will be presenting several information packed seminars in the Trinity Hall during the show.
Friday March 2nd at 3pm and Saturday March 3rd at 1pm Lake Almanor “The Early Season” will focus on tips and techniques that will help you fool monster trout during the Winter and early Spring.
Sunday March 4th at 1pm Fall Fishing on Eagle Lake will cover trolling as well as fly fishing and lay out strategies that will make you more successful during the prime Fall months.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Line Guide Service (530-263-7944) (www.fishtightlines.com) reports:
Davis Lake is where were fishing today.
But first, as we were traveling on Hwy 89 out of Truckee we soon learned the highway was a solid ice. After a little thrill with the truck and boat going sideways we decided to slow down and take our time.
We arrived at the Honker Cove parking lot, I knew it was not going to an easy launch. We found about 3 inches of snow with solid ice under it. Knowing, I was going to need chains to get up the ramp, I decided to install them in the upper parking lot rather than on the ramp.
As I was installing the chains I asked my son-in-law to walk down and check the ramp. Upon returning, he told me, “the whole cove was solid ice". I was even more disappointed and broke the news to our clients.
We decided to run over to Mallards Cove and check that ramp. We found a lot less snow and open water at the ramp. With chains still installed we were able to get the boat in the water without much of a problem.
We started trolling straight out in front of the ramp and headed towards the big island. About half hour without a hit, I was wondering if it was just going to be one of those days.
Once we got into a little deeper water I started marking fish just off the bottom at 30 feet. The water temperature was 37 degrees on the surface so I dropped a probe to see what the temperature was at 30 feet. The result was 38 degrees at 30 feet of water, one degree difference is a all.
I started targeting the fish on the bottom using the downriggers and in no time we were hooked up.
Our clients today were Tom Gore of Healdsburg and Geoff Eisenberg of San Francisco who landed his first fish ever, a nice 16 inch rainbow.
I was glad we were using our new Lamiglas kokanee rods with P-Line 6 lb. CXX, it made that 16 inch fish feel much bigger then it was.
From that point on we put 15 nice rainbows in the boat in two and a half hours. We used several different lures such as a Shasta Tackle Red/Gold Humdingers and Needlefish but they seemed to want the smallest Dick Night spoon in Copper/Pink slathered with Pro-Cure Garlic Plus.
The weather ran the gamut today from sun to snow flurries.
After learning this was Geoff first fish and we ended up with limits of nice rainbows, it made all the extra effort getting the boat in the water worth it.

EAGLE LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Eagle Lake is closed.

ELK GROVE PARK POND, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
The fishing season for Fall River is closed.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
The fishing season for the Feather River is closed.

FREMONT LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Fremont Lake is closed.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
The weather is unpredictable, but the fishing is just getting better with each passing day. If the sun is shining, fishermen are fishing.
There is still about 10 inches of ice at the dam, but there is open water to the right and to the left of the dam.
There have been reports of open water near Big Cove.
The road is good up to the dam, and if you have a four wheel drive, getting around the lake is no problem. Watch out for those patches of ice!
BE CAREFUL! They are using nightcrawlers and/or Power Bait (rainbow orange and garlic).

FT. CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS, LYON COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season opened on February 11.

HALSEY FOREBAY, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
The fishing season for Hat Creek is closed.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Heenan Lake is closed.

HINKSON SLOUGH, LYON COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season opened on February 11.
Fishing is excellent. Float tubers catching fish in the middle of the water column use an intermediate line for best results. Anglers have been using sheep creeks and midge patterns.
Catch rates were high for the opener 5 to 10 fish per day.
Rainbows are averaging in 12-13 inch range some in 18 inch range.
Water is clear and vegetation is not up.
Attention Anglers Tagged Fish
The Nevada Department of Wildlife is conducting a growth and catch rate study and has tagged 4,000 fish that were planted during 2010 and 2011!
If you catch one of these tagged fish report the tag number and fish size to the phone number on the tag, or fill out a drop box form in the box below.
A certificate of appreciation which includes fish species, strain, age, size at stocking, and date of stocking will be sent back to the successful angler if a name and address are included.
Additional info…
Red tag= BelAir strain from Colorado,
Yellow tag= Tahoe strain from Marlette Lake
Blue tag= Eagle Lake strain from California,
White tag= Cutbow from Marlette Lake (rainbow X cutthroat)
Look closely next to the dorsal fin of each fish you catch, sometimes tags are hard to see and some anglers are not noticing them.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season for Hobart Reservoir is closed.

HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA, CALIF:
The fishing season for the Hoover Wilderness Area is closed.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow at 9 CFS.  No change in the fishing here.
Nymph fishing is still the best bet. Try small WD-40's Miracle Nymphs Pheasant Tails and Midge patterns.
Fishing is good but the creek has been very crowded.
Please do not wade here.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
It has been fun fishing the BWO emergence after 1 pm.
Flows are still fine and nice drifts in the slots will produce decent numbers.
Access is good with very little ice and snow along the banks.
The trails leading down are clear.
If you had to choose one month to fish HC I would take March first, with September being a close second.
The fish here are bonkers for Baetis and if you like to fish adults on top this is prime time. Nymphing the "holes" with small Midge or Mayfly patterns is also working during off hatch periods.
Try a scud pattern # 18 for a shot at one of the bigs here.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.thetroutfitter.com" www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Great. Flows constant at 21-22 CFS as of 2/17.
THE RECENT SNOW PUT A LITTLE MORE ON THE ROAD TO THE CLOSED GATE BUT WITH 4X4 SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM
IT IS A SHORT WALK FROM THERE TO THE CANYON SECTION. YOU CAN DRIVE OUT TO THE INTERPRETIVE SITE AS WELL.
Fishing conditions: Good to Excellent.
NOT MUCH CHANGE FROM LAST WEEK EXCEPT BIGGER HATCHES WITH OVERCAST SKIES IN FORECAST.
The canyon section, it is fishing similar to summer with smaller Midges and Baetis patterns subsurface all day and moderate to strong hatches midday.
Once the water temp comes up about two degrees the food bell rings and it is downright good for 3-4 hours daily.
Interpretive section has still been producing big fish for those in the know.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
The fishing season for the June Lake Loop is closed.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Kirman Lake is closed.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing has slowed down. Lahontan is full and very cold.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
The fishing season for the Mammoth Lakes Basin is closed.

MARKLEEVILLE CREEK CALIF:
The fishing season for Markleeville Creek is closed.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:

MASON VALLEY W.M.A., LYON COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season opened on February 11.

MATHER LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

NORTH POND, LYON COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season opened on February 11.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Lower Owens River: Get it while you can folks.
Crowley is full pool and you can expect the discharges to go up significantly in early March. Flows are perfect at 125 CFS. below PV Rez currently.
I will post changes on my Facebook page (see link at top) when needed.
The real-time online gages for the LADWP are not working in several areas. I do not know why or when they will be accurate again.
Wading is very good in the wild trout section and the Blue Winged Olive (BWO) hatch is the highlight of the day, if not the entire season currently.
The Baetis begin popping after noon and continue for a couple hours most days. The wild fish are focused on this emergence and one may find slower fishing before and after this hatch.
Use Mayfly Nymphs as your imitations if you do not see the high winged adults floating in the suds.
Drift boat fishing has been on and off despite ideal conditions.
My own theory is that many fish migrated upstream during the extended period of flood last season to escape the silt and debris in the lower sections and have not returned.
We have had some good trips using streamers like my Spruce-a-Bu and Punk Perch and sinking tip lines.
We are also targeting the afternoon Mayfly hatch at times and getting into some fun surface action.
Upper Owens River: This has been an exceptional year on the Upper Owens with regards to the mild weather and incredible fishing overall for migratory rainbows and browns moving up from Crowley Lake.
Access has become good to the UO, however many of the two track roads leading down to the river are frozen in the morning but mud pits when it thaws. You need to closely evaluate where you drive or expect a hefty towing bill.
Flows remain higher than normal and the water can be off color at times, especially when it gets above freezing in the mornings.
The fall run rainbows and browns are beginning to thin out substantially and I have seen numerous hens that have dropped their eggs and spawned out.
The next wave of spring bows (Kamloops and Eagle Lake strain) are beginning to arrive with the much smaller population of Cutts not far off if this weather pattern holds. The numbers of smaller fish have also decreased substantially and are returning back to Crowley. This migration shift is about a month earlier than normal due to the mild winter.
Good Midge activity on the high pressure days, with some Baetis popping on the warmer days after 1:30 pm.
Nymphing with an Under-cator has been the best means of getting into the bigs and a variety of patterns will get you grabs.
I have always believed it is the "archer", not so much the arrow - in this type of fly fishing.
Remember the three "P’s"- Positioning, Presenting, and Playing.
This rule will get you a shot at seeing one of these gorgeous fish.
We have been getting fish on everything from Midges to Mayflies with a side of "ham & eggs" (Roe and a San Juan Worm) patterns.
These spawning fish are not looking to feed folks; it is a programmed behavioral response that gets them to take a fly. Because they are cold blooded, their metabolisms will rise or fall with the water temperature. They are very stoic at times and will not move far to take a fly. Redundant drifts in front of their snouts are what will get you opportunities.
Owens River Gorge: The late winter and early spring periods here are prime time. The flows will remain constant here even when they increase in other areas. This section is open year around and not subject to runoff or seasonal fluctuations.
Moderate hiking and rock hopping are mandatory, wild browns kinda on the small side- but as pretty as you will see anywhere.
The BWO hatch is the "thang" right now and these fish are eager to take dries. You need to approach from a downstream position casting upstream in order not to spook these wild browns.
Keep your patterns in the # 14-18 range; a 3-4 wt rod is perfect.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:   Current water flow is 97 CFS. Fishing is closed below the Benton Crossing Bridge. The river upstream is open to fishing all year.
Barbless artificials only. Zero limit.
Fishing is fair. Try standard Nymph patterns like Pheasant Tails or Hares Ears. Cover lots of water.
Some reports of larger lake fish in the river.
Lower Owens River: Water flow is 256 CFS. Flows are steady.
Fishing is picking with nicer weather in the forecast.
Olive WD-40's, Caddis larva and small Pheasant Tails.
Surface activity is on th upswing with adult Midge and BWO patterns.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.thetroutfitter.com" www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens Water conditions: Good to Excellent. As of 2/17 the flows are constant at 96 CFS.
Road is open all the way up.
4X4 a must now and expect to get a wash job when you get back to town.
Fishing conditions: Good to Excellent.
A mix of fish from dinks to Crowley pigs.
Everyone doing well from 10 am until as late as 3:30 daily.
Mostly Nymphing but a 45 min hatch midday is typical.
Go to very small or pull streamers for the big guys.
Owens River Gorge Water conditions: Great. Flow: 45 CFS.
This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP
Fishing conditions: Excellent and nice and warm on cool sunny days this time of year.
Beautiful these days and lots of hungry fish to greet you!
Lower Owens Water conditions: Excellent. Notice how the flow report hasn't changed by even a tenth of a CFS in two weeks. 'Found out the gauge is stuck. Actual flow is really about 240 cfs as of 2/17.
The first-hand info from LADWP is that the flows will be increased by 50 CFS each week until at 400 CFS then hold there.
Warmer and longer days have brought water temps up. Wading and drifting are still good now so strike while the iron is hot.
Fishing conditions: Wide Open, Hatch-o-rama.
Pat's formula is still the hot ticket . . .
Midge clusters showing up as early as 9am, so start with small Midge patterns sub-surface or go with Griffth's Gnat up top.
About 10-11am the May Flies start to come off big time.
To get your "one of the many" noticed try a surface emerger in the film off a big BWO as the indictor. If they take the "indicator" skip the dropper and enjoy life for a couple of hours. Late in the day, 3-4 pm, go back to midges.

PINE VALLEY COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
The fishing season for the Pine Valley Complex is closed.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
It has been disappointing the last two weeks here in the transition area due to very high lake levels that have this sweet section flooded into the trees.
The gauge for the lake level is not correct here, it is currently 4387’ plus most days.
The small river section below the powerhouse has been great using dry dropper bead head or emerger patterns & BWO or Para Midge adults, but it is not large enough to spend an entire day on, especially if there are other anglers on this section.
Tubing has been fair near the inlet and around the launch ramp, but it got pounded over President’s Day weekend so a truck load or two of DFG fish will need to get dumped to get numbers back up again.
Full sinking lines and streamers fished along the drop-offs on the west side are best. Still water Nymphing here will also produce-stay down 10-13 feet and rig like you would for Crowley using Midge and Mayfly imitations.

POORE AND SECRET LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Poore and Secret Lakes is closed.

ROOSEVELT AND LANE LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Roosevelt and Lane Lakes is closed.

RYE PATCH RESERVOIR, PERSHING COUNTY, NEV:

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF:
J.D. Richey of www.fishingwithjd.com (916-388-1956) reports:
WINTER PATTERN
The water is muddy for much of the river’s length at the moment, though it is unseasonably low for the dead of winter.
There are some sturgeon popping up here and there on eggs, eel and ghost shrimp at places like Merritt’s, the Firing Line, Verona and Colusa.
Up above, the trout bite near Redding has been solid for anglers indicator Nymphing with PT’s, Zug Bugs, Stones and Bird’s Nests.

SAN JOAQUIN/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Road closed.

SILVER CREEK, CALIF:
The fishing season for Silver Creek is closed.

LAKE TAHOE:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No new reports. Fishing for Mackinaw has been outstanding with all the winter good weather but fishing will be changing with the new storm reports coming in. Check back in when the weather clears.
Reports of 2-6 pound fish are showing up regularly in the creel with an occasional double digit fish 12 to 15 pounds and up.
Best method is still minnow dodger set up in 150 to 200 ft.
Fishing has been good in Sand Harbor area.

LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) (www.blueribbonfishing.com) reports:
My family and I have all been down with the flu for the last few days, but the Mackinaw fishing was awesome last week.
The Macks are running 2-8 pounds and we also caught two that measured 33 inches and 36 inches.
I’ve been trolling 250-280 feet deep with Dodgers and minnows at the Tahoe City Shelf on the west side of the lake.

TOPAZ LAKE:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Opened January 1, 2012.
Boat anglers reported limits of fish in the 2 lb range and up to 3 lb.
The Fishing continues to be good with such mild weather.
The best method is trolling either needleFish or Rapalas.
Shore anglers are catching fish averaging 16 inch.
Best method is still Chartreuse Power Bait.

TOPAZ LAKE:
Chuck and Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported:
It has been kind of up and down with not a lot of people out fishing.
There was a 5.5 pounder caught from the northwest bank with a nightcrawler, a 9 pounder caught from the north shore and a 5.5 pounder taken while trolling with a Fire Tiger Rapala lure.
The boats trolling on top are catching limits of 1-1.5 pound rainbows.

TRUCKEE RIVER, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
The Truckee's current flow in Reno is 372 CFS.
Anglers have been catching some nice fish but have been working for them.
Baetis hatch is been showing up in the evening or in overcast days try blue wing olive or Dunn.
Spin fishermen are having luck with eggs, Power Bait, gold Kastmasters, black and yellow Panther Martin, and jointed Rapalas.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Twin Lakes is closed.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
The fishing season for Virginia Lakes is closed.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lake since 2009. Mineral County Road Dept. has done some work on the State Parks Launch. Launching is improved but you still need four wheel drive.

WALKER RIVERS, NEV:
(East Walker River – West Walker River):
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
East Walker River:
East Walker Flow is at 17 CFS. Fishing is slow.
Fishing has been good in the last couple of weeks but with lower temperatures and lower stream flows the fishing will be sluggish at best.
Ice will form with the low flow and colder temps.
Keep an eye out for flow and high temps.
Small Midge patterns and Baetis patters are working.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker – West Walker – Sceirine Ranch - Hunewill Pond:
East Walker River:
West Walker River: Closed.
Sceirine Ranch: We haven't had any clients on the Sceirine lately but it should be fishing excellent as well. If you want solitude this could be a great opportunity!
Hunewill Pond: Closed.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.sierradrifters.com" www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
East Walker River:
This will be an interesting season on the EW.
Bridgeport is super full & Jeffery at the lakes "finest kind" of marina is keeping a life jacket handy if it gets any higher!
The flows as of this report are at a trickle (19 CFS) this is very low, even for winter releases. I prefer not to fish it at this level.
The irrigation people are holding water back until the last minute due to the poor snowpack. You can expect flows to go up soon and condition’s to improve after the fish adjust to the new levels.
Typically early March is when water demand begins to increase.
Flows have been at 25 CFS most of the winter and during the warmer days the BWO hatch was very strong with active fish.
The warmer winter has kept the fish feeding and overall reports here have been pretty good.
Nymphing the deeper pools near the dam section or Miracle Mile have been productive. Midges and Mayfly imitations with or without an Under-cator, and BWO adults after lunch.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Water conditions:
Good. Flows dropped to mandated minimum of 19 cfs and holding for last 4 days. Access with 4X4.
Fishing conditions:
Okay to Excellent. Low water level has the big guys on the prowl but tend to have lock jaw as the swim by and taunt you.
The guides and old hands are still scoring but some reports of "It was tough." from a few customers.
Midges in the 18-20 range producing all day and decent BWO hatch midday for an hour or two. Hatches should pick up with cloudy skies in the forecast.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Flows are steady at 25 CFS. Most of the ice is now gone but the water temp is a chilly 38.  Due to the low flows not many "good" spots exist.
Some mid day surface action with adult Midge patterns.
Add a Midge pupa as a dropper.

WILLOW HILL RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

WILLIAM LAND PARK POND, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.
