State workers to speak out against program elimination, layoffs and prison closure
There will be some tough love in Carson City today among state employees who will take a firm stand against Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed budget that takes aim at public services.
Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 4041 employees and its retiree chapter will address their concerns to the public and press at noon on this Valentine's Day in front of the Legislative Building, 401 South Carson Street in Carson City.
AFSCME members from around the state will call for a budget that focuses on the economy and protecting vital public services and jobs.
With community and political leaders by their side, including Danny Thompson of the AFL-CIO, state workers intend to send a strong message to Gov. Sandoval and lawmakers in their will to protect public health, safety and education of its residents, union officials say. AFSCME represents more than 4,000 state employees including correctional officers and university employees.
"A scorched earth strategy will not serve Nevadans well," said UNLV employee and AFSCME Local 4041 President Neil Lake. "Many of the jobs the Governor has targeted for layoffs are critical to the state’s public safety including pre-sentence investigators and correctional officers. Other cuts to education, mental health programs and social service programs will undermine the Governor’s desire to make Nevada great again.”
