Carson City veterans, homeless housing facility receive generous community partner donations
Residents of Carson City’s Richards Crossing, a housing, on-the-job training and resource facility for veterans, homeless and extremely low-income individuals, were delighted and surprised by the generous holiday gifts given to them by a number of organizations.
Those include KOLO News Channel 8; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; the Adopt a Vet Dental Program; the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserves Association (LA FRA), Branch 137; and Brenda Horton, veteran supporter and community volunteer.
KOLO News Channel 8 provided 40 gift bags, one for each resident. The gifts were the result of a letter sent to the news station, stating that while the facility was incredibly beautiful for the holidays, the Richards Crossing residents weren’t expecting to open any gifts. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided sewn stockings filled with a variety of personal items, useful to each resident. And alongside the stockings came a tree decked with ornaments, provided by the Adopt a Vet Dental Program and LA FRA, led by Horton.
Richards Crossing is a collaboration between the Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) and the local Friend In Service Helping organization among a host of other financial and programmatic partners, including the Nevada Housing Division with Richman Group Affordable Housing Corp. and American Express, the U.S. Department of Housing, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, Charles Schwab Bank, the Home Depot Foundation, and Wells Fargo Community Lending and Investment.
“Richards Crossing is a perfect example of how public and private partnership can come together and make a difference,” said Heather Simola, Real Property Administrator with NRHA. “At NRHA, our goal isn’t simply to put a roof over a person’s head, but instead, help that person build the resources and tools he or she needs to become self-sufficient.”
Richards Crossing, located at 430 Jeanell Drive, features 38 single-family units. Eight of the apartment units are reserved for chronically homeless veterans subsidized by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development VASH Program funds. The remaining 30 units also receive Section 8, project-based rental assistance, and are prioritized for veterans, disabled individuals and the general homeless population.
