Carson City Commute for Jan. 13: Carson City schools on one hour delay
Carson City schools are on a one-hour delay Friday morning, according to the Carson City School District web site, following significant snowfall Thursday that partially melted and then froze overnight.
Thursday's highs into the mid to upper 30s brought thawing to area roads in the afternoon as snow on surface streets turned to slush.
However, the overnight low into Friday morning has dipped back into the 20s, causing water on roadways to glaze over with ice in places.
Motorists are advised to drive slow and cautious Friday morning on their way into and out of Carson City to work.
Scattered snow showers are possible Friday morning until about 11 a.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports, but only a 30 percent chance with total accumulation of less than half an inch possible.
Friday's daytime high is forecast to reach 34 degrees in the Nevada state capital, starting out overcast and then becoming mostly cloudy to partly sunny in the afternoon.
Some area highways continue to post chain and/or snow tire requirements, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
Chains or snow tires are required on U.S. Highway 395 Alternate through the Washoe Valley, from the county line at Carson City to mile post 7.22 in Washoe County, as well as from the Bowers Mansion interchange over Interstate 580 to East Patriot Blvd. off South Virginia Street in Reno, NDOT reports.
Currently, there are no controls posted by NDOT on I-580 through Carson City or Washoe Valley.
Traction tires or devices are required on a 29-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 395 South through Douglas County, including the Carson Valley, NDOT reports.
On U.S. Highway 50 at Spooner Summit in Carson City, chains or snow tires are required to four and a half miles east toward the Nevada state capital. Traction tires or devices are also required from the Douglas County at Spooner Summit for more than 14 miles along the shore of Lake Tahoe, NDOT reports.
Chains or snow tires are required on State Rout 88 from the state line Douglas County to mile post 7.8 in Douglas County.
Kingsbury Grade up SR 207 in Douglas County is still closed from Foothill Road to Tramway.
A section of SR 28 requires chains or snow tires Friday morning, from the Douglas County through Carson City to mile post 3.0 in Washoe County.
Traction tires or devices are required mile post 3 in Lyon County to milepost 8.3 in Storey County.
And SR 431 for 24 miles up or down the Mount Rose Highway requires chains or snow tires Friday morning.
