Lattin Farms and Mewaldt Organics team up to introduce new organic variety garlic to Northern Nevada
Two Nevada farms are working together to introduce something different, something better in the organic garlic world. Bill Mewaldt of Mewaldt Organics and Rick Lattin of Lattin Farms have joined up to introduce a new soft white certified organic garlic variety to Northern Nevada and beyond.
Thirty years ago, Dr. Mewaldt, retired Western Nevada College professor, began working on developing a garlic that was superior to those currently on the market.
Through thirty years of selecting only the choice bulbs to replant, the Lahontan variety is being released to the public in 2013. Grown in isolation in the Lahontan Valley this strain is superior in taste, size and keeping ability to others on the market. Grown at 4,000 foot elevation it is exceptionally hardy and can be grown throughout Northern Nevada.
Lattin Farms has spent the last three years growing out the stock seed and now has enough product to sale wholesale and retail to the fresh garlic and garlic seed market.
On Saturday, June 29th and Saturday, July 6th Lattin Farms is holding garlic braiding classes taught by Bill Mewaldt of Mewaldt Organics as part of the introduction of the Lahontan garlic. Classes are free and will be held at 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. both days. Participants may take braids home for the price of the garlic. Lattin’s Country Kitchen will be sampling several products with Lahontan garlic and be supplying garlic recipes to guests.
