Silver City Arts Group Offers Free Public Events

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Since 2014, Silver City Arts group has hosted music, visual arts, and poetry events and programs. The group draws on the community's own rich resource of artists, artisans and musicians, and also connects with regional and statewide groups to bring programming by national and international artists and musicians. The group of volunteers’ mission is "to encourage the arts, build community, and share our unique town through free, public events." Below are a few highlights.

Silver City Arts Group Programs/Displays:

Monthly Acoustic Jam Sessions: Scheduled for the 4th Saturday of each month from 3pm-5pm at the School House, people are invited to bring their instruments (or their voices) and jam. The next jam is April 22nd.

Silver City Arts Display at the U.S. Post Office in Silver City: The April display features framed, signed paintings by Mel Matlean, Vern. R. Horton and Steven Saylor, donated by Joe and Ann McCarthy to benefit Silver City Arts free public programming. To acquire one of these pieces of fine art and build your own art collection, make a donation to SCA.

Silver City Poetry and Song Lyrics Corner: This ongoing project gives past and present Silver City residents a chance to share their work publicly in a designated "Poetry Corner" at the local Post Office. Poems can be sent to Quest at quest@theodata.com

May 6 Exhibit Reception: Silver City Arts is hosting an exhibition of paintings by long time Silver City resident Larry Kotik, known for his remarkable Dayton mural of Comstock history. The reception takes place at the Silver City School House on May 6, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Appetizers will be served.

Oct 2014 Pop-Up Show with internationally acclaimed Danish artist Nes Lerpa.

Oct 2014 Exhibit of fine art, photography and publications by long time Silver City residents - this was one of the official Signature events across the state marking the Nevada Sesquicentennial. It attracted about 200 visitors from near and far. Exhibit design by Karen Kreyeski.

Dec 2014: holiday artisan show with music by cellists Diane Kotik and Becky Crowe.

May 2015 Screening of the documentary "Rockin' at the Red Dog: The Dawn of Psychedelic Rock" by Silver City native Mary Works Covington.

May 2015 Nevada Historic Preservation Month Exhibit with photos from the Germino Archives, courtesy of Sam Toll, plus an exhibit illustrating Silver City's cultural re-population 1965-2005.

July 2015 Fine Art Exhibition of artwork by others that Silver City residents own and treasure (included works by Walter McNamara, Estelle Peck Ishigo, Mick Sheldon, Joan Arrizabalaga, Nolan Preece, Ray Obermayr, Edw Martinez, Gus Bundy, Jim McCormick, Jeff Nicholson, Jean LeGassick, Lorna Obermayr, etc.) Exhibit designed by Michigan artist Brian Schorn.

Dec 2015 Silver City Musicians Display: The SCA group created a display for December 2015 with photos, instruments, and CD covers celebrating music by present and past Silver City residents.

June 2016 Reading: In June, well-known Nevada poet Shaun Griffin read from his new memoir.

Summer 2016 Exhibition: In July, SCA hosted a pop-up show and reception for Karen Kreyeksi's The Women's Project: The Gift at the School House, along with a reading of her related poetry.

August 2016 Inaugura- Palooza concert. The festival style event was held in celebration the town’s new outdoor stage, the Silver Pavilion. Evangeline Presents, Yellow Truck Productions, the Silver City Historic Preservation Society and Silver City Arts group all teamed up to help with the fundraising party featuring musicians living in or associated with Silver City past and present. $1,000 was raised for lighting and other gear for the new stage.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.
