Senators fall to rival Douglas in crunch time, 50-48
The Senators took their two game win streak into Douglas High School to conclude their regular season.
But Douglas had playoff aspirations of their own, and a win for Carson wouldn't be easy heading into hostile territory against the rival Tigers on Saturday.
From the tip, the Senators held a firm grip on the game, not letting the ear blistering crowd of Douglas distract them from their ultimate goal.
Jayden DeJoseph put the Senators up double digits in a flash, as his combination of finishing through contact and draining threes from the outside put instant pressure on Douglas to answer. He scored 16 of his 22 points in just two quarters.
Tez Allen started many fastbreaks for Carson; as he hauled in rebounds and sprinted coast to coast banking in many floaters. Also finding his teammates with many accurate outlet passes, putting Carson up to a comfortable 16-point lead heading into halftime against their bitter rivals, 32-16.
The pendulum soon swung for Douglas, as the 13-point lead the Senators held after the third quarter was soon dissolved by three straight 3-pointers by Douglas in the fourth quarter, putting the rowdy Tiger crowd back on their feet.
Many unforced turnovers by Carson led to Douglas taking advantage in a hurry, as a ferocious dunk by Tre Jackson tied the game at 48 with one minute and 24 seconds left.
Another inexplicable turnover by the Senators put Douglas with a golden opportunity to leave the game crowned victorious.
A timeout was called by Douglas with 11.4 seconds remaining, and forward Dalton Davis hit the game-winning layup for Douglas with 5.5 seconds left putting douglas ahead 50-48 with 3.3 seconds left.
A last second heave by Allen wasn't enough, leaving the Senators speechless, and the crowd elated.
Jayden DeJoseph finsihed with 22 points and seven rebounds. While Tez Allen chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
After the game, coach Carlos Mendeguia described the heartbreaking loss for the senators.
"We knew coming down here was gonna be a tough game being up 16 at half surprised us as well because they're a well coached team. They usually get runs in the third quarter and we were ready for that. Unfortunately, it happend in the fourth quarter this time. But they are a team that never quits and got rolling after that 14-0 run while feeding off the crowd. It was hard to stop the bleeding for us, but we know the adjustments we need to make. I think the kids know what happened tonight, it's burning inside we played Reno on the road last time and lost. But we probably played our worst game of the year, and we will make some proper adjustments in practice on Monday and get after it."
The Senators will look to rebound in the crucial stages of the playoffs.
