UPDATE SUNDAY: A 23-year-old woman died Saturday as a result of injuries in a crash that happened in the 2500 block of Airport Road, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed. The condition of the second patient flown by Care Flight is unknown at this time.

The woman's identity has not been released. The crash is under investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours Saturday.

I was delighted recently to receive a video of my 13-year-old granddaughter, Avery, executing a floor routine in a gymnastics meet, culminating in a full layout back-somersault that dropped my jaw.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public to identify a suspect for a vehicle theft that happened Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, in the area of Rand Avenue in Carson City.

On Thursday, Carson City Supervisors will select a sculpture design for the roundabout at South Carson Street and South Stewart Street, which is intended to serve as Carson City’s downtown gateway.

Previously, a request for qualifications was released and the city received 153 submissions which were then scored by an ad-hoc panel. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has investigated a former staff member at China Spring Youth Camp who was arrested on December 14, 2023 and booked on two separate crimes of sexual conduct with children under the care, custody, control of supervision of the Camp in violation of NRS 201.555.

The crimes are category C felonies punishable by up to five years in prison for each offense and fines up to $10,000.

In addition to the recent resignations of both the long-standing Douglas County School District Superintendent Keith Lewis, as well as the Director of Human Resources Joe Girdner, the next district leader to tender his resignation is board member Tony Magnotta.

Magnotta announced his intention to resign last week, done in protest against the board majority’s actions since January.

A 30-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drugs with suspected intent to sell and other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Carson High School’s Speech and Debate team had a commanding performance at the December tournament held at Hug High in Reno over the weekend, with 23 Carson City students participating and 19 advancing to final rounds.

UPDATE 8PM: Roadways have begun to open up following the crash investigation involving a pedestrian and motorist that happened early Tuesday evening. According to Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Matt Smith, the adult female victim was flown by CareFlight to Renown Medical Center in Reno where she is being treated for injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.

The crash happened in a crosswalk where the victim was crossing west to east and was struck by a vehicle. The driver is an adult and impairment is not suspected, said Sgt. Smith.

Southwest Gas is proposing a 4 percent rate hike for Northern Nevada customers, with the average bill increase amounting to $5.80 a month. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled two consumer sessions on Thursday, Dec. 14, to hear public comments regarding the proposed rate hike.

Sierra Nevada Realtors released its November 2023 report Tuesday on existing home sales in Carson City and nearby counties, showing a 12.8 percent decrease in median price for single-family homes and a significant jump over the year in the median price of capital city townhomes.

On Monday evening at 10:29 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office began receiving the first of numerous information tips from social media platforms of a threat to Carson High School. The alleged threats suggested that a violent event would take place on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Sheriff Ken Furlong immediately informed Carson City Schools Superintendent Andrew Feuling of the allegations, who in turn notified school administrators.

HCC hosts speakers from Neighbor Network of Northern Nevada

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) hosts a public breakfast meeting every other month at the Silver Springs Community Center. The next meeting is Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023 at 9 a.m.

Each meeting includes introductions from all attending, presentations by guest speakers, and discussion and updates about collaborative efforts to increase access to health care; nutritious food; workforce development; and prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

The Carson City District Attorney’s Office will temporarily relocate while its carpet is replaced from Dec. 13-27. During this time, the district attorney's lobby will be closed to the public. Meetings with attorneys, victim witness services and other staff will be by appointment only.

In 2022 and 2023, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office investigated many cases of people selling counterfeit jewelry. These cases were also linked to similar cases in Northern Nevada.

These suspects often solicit in casinos parking lots and shopping center parking lots that they need money or food to continue their trips. They target elderly citizens in parking lots, using high-pressure tactics to sell jewelry to their victims.
