Carson City teen arrested on alleged sale of cannabis following traffic stop for racing at 8 a.m.
A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of N. Carson Street and College Parkway Thursday morning after deputies witnessed what appeared to be two cars racing each other.
Alfonso Pineda Herrera was arrested after deputies noted two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed on E. College Parkway, one of which slammed on its brakes when the driver appeared to notice the patrol car. The second vehicle, however, continued at a high rate of speed, and deputies conducted a traffic stop on the second vehicle while advising dispatch of the first vehicle’s direction of travel.
When deputies made contact with the driver, identified as Pineda Herrera, they asked why he’d been racing. Pineda Herrera denied racing, but only mumbled something about being on his way to work when deputies asked why he’d been driving so fast, according to the arrest report.
Deputies noted the vehicle had a strong smell of cannabis emanating from it as they spoke to Pineda Herrera, and asked Pineda Herrera how old he was, to which he responded 19. They asked if there was any cannabis inside the vehicle, to which Pineda Herrera “hesitated with his answer, then stated no,” according to deputies.
Deputies removed Pineda Herrera from the vehicle and conducted a search. Inside the passenger door they located a 9mm Glock handgun magazine, and an open box of Ziploc snack baggies in the glove box along with small packages of “burning papers” (rolling papers).
Deputies continued their search and located a black backpack in the backseat which contained two packages of dispensary cannabis, a black weighing scale, two small pipes with burned cannabis residue, a cannabis grinner, a blue bandana, black gloves, flash drive, and a blue “COOKIES” tray. There were also an additional two used Ziploc baggies with cannabis residue inside. Deputies were unable to locate a handgun, but did locate an unspent 9mm bullet between the driver’s seat and center console, along with an opened bottle of Hennessy liquor.
On Pineda Herrera’s person, deputies located his wallet which contained $860 of various denominations, which they determined was indicative of drug sales.
Pineda Herrera was transported to the Carson City Jail without incident and booked for drug sales first offense, possession of under one ounce of cannabis under the age of 21, and speeding 1-10 mph over the limit.
Bail: $22,592
