Sheriff’s Office Personnel are still recovering from the long, hot weekend of working Night in the Country in Yerington. From the Sheriff’s Office point of view the event went well, and was relatively calm. There were calls for service, and law enforcement actions taken on several occasions. Southwest Gas recently made a donation of $2,500 to Night Off The Streets, Carson City's shelter for the homeless program that operates during the winter months.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office will celebrate National Night Out from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, at the Fernley Out of Town Park Gazebo. Similar law enforcement community events will be held in Carson City and August 8 in Virginia City.

Carson City School Board trustees unanimously approved new material for the district's sex education curriculum during its Tuesday meeting.

Teachers are not forced to teach the material, but the material is made available to them for their choice of instruction.

The Douglas County School Board of Trustees voted 4-3 in a contentious meeting to fire current legal counsel, who has served the district for over 20 years, in favor of controversial Reno-based attorney Joey Gilbert, who has no background in educational law and will cost significantly more money. This was due to current counsel allegedly not supporting the board's proposed move to ban transgender students from engaging in sports according to Board President Susan Jansen.

Gilbert stated that while he is not an expert, he will hire other outside law firms — including the firm the board chose to fire — who are experts in the educational field of law.

The Carson City Historical Society announces a free Carson City Historical Society East Side Tour on Saturday, July 29, 2023, starting at 10 a.m. This will be similar to the tour that was offered June 24.

A 24-year-old Carson City man, Damien Wallace, was arrested in the area of Colorado St. and Blue Haven Ln. following a road rage incident that led to felony crimes.
