Driver identified in fatal crash involving passenger bus on US-50 and SR-28 near Lake Tahoe
The Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division has identified the victim of a July 18 fatal vehicle crash involving a passenger bus on Highway 50 West at Spooner Summit and State Route 28 near Lake Tahoe.
Michael Dale Werner, 61, from Camos, Wash., died on-scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, according to NSP.
On Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Nevada State Police responded to the crash at the location of US-50 at SR-28, located in Douglas County.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 Toyota RAV4 was traveling southbound on SR-28, approaching the US-50W intersection. An Amador Stage Line passenger bus was traveling westbound on US-50 approaching the intersection with SR28.
The Toyota RAV4 failed to stop at the stop sign on SR-28 and entered the path of the Amador Stage Line passenger bus. The front of the Amador Stage Line passenger bus struck the left side of Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota, Werner, died at the scene of the crash. The passenger of the Toyota was transported from the scene to a local hospital with non- life-threatening injuries.
Eighteen people (adults), including the driver, occupied the Amador Stage Line passenger bus. Minor injuries were reported, however no one from the bus was transported for medical attention.
Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West M.I.R.T (Multidisciplinary Investigation & Reconstruction Team) is investigating this crash.
The fatality marks the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol – Northern Command West 23rd fatal crash, resulting in 26 fatalities for 2023.
