The Sheriff’s Office review of crime data for the Calendar year 2022 highlighted significant events both early and late in the year.

Kicking off the new year in January 2022, a bank robbery was reported at the Plumas Bank on North Carson Street with the alleged suspect shooting randomly in the bank, and the year ended in December just two blocks away from the bank with a homicide following a dispute between pedestrians. In both cases, the suspects were rapidly identified and taken into custody.

Just when power was beginning to fully be restored around Carson City from the New Year's storm, another widespread outage returned Wednesday afternoon affecting more than 5,200 NV Energy customers.

Carson City will open a warming shelter Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023 at the Carson City Fire Station 51, 777 S. Stewart St., Carson City from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Newly elected Storey County Sheriff Mike Cullen said his goals as he is sworn in this week will be to reduce traffic crashes and cut down on speeding drivers on the county’s roadways and reduce crime through increased vigilance.

Winter storms lined up this week will bring more snow to Carson City, the lower valleys and Sierra, with the second midweek storm being the largest thus far, according to the National Weather Service.

Through Tuesday, a quick-moving storm will bring snow levels down to all valley floors. Snowfall amounts will be light, generally 5 to 10 inches along the Sierra crest, 2 to 5 inches in the Tahoe Basin and up to 2 inches elsewhere.
The weather service advises motorists to prepare for slick roads.

Carson City will open a warming shelter Monday at the Carson City Multi-Purpose Athletic Center at 1860 Russell Way, Carson City and remain open to residents until 8 p.m. this evening.

A new church in Carson City will hold its grand opening this Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023 at 10 a.m.

Beginning Jan. 1, a new Nevada law will decriminalize several minor traffic offenses, including driving with broken tail lights and carrying people in the bed of a truck, eliminating the possibility of jail time for such violations and for those unable to pay their traffic fines.
