Friends of the Nevada State Museum share Silver State history with the world
Sharing Nevada’s unique and exciting history with visitors from across Nevada and from around the world has been part of the commitment that the Friends of the Nevada State Museum made decades ago.
FNSM and other volunteers conduct guided tours and lead educational programs at the Museum, from the famous mine exhibit to Dat-so-la-lee baskets to classroom demonstrations. In addition, some of the guides also provide tours of the historic Nevada State Capitol Building.
Recognizing the dynamic growth in the number of visitors to Carson City and the Museum, the Friends of the NSM group is recruiting additional individuals to serve in a variety of volunteer capacities at the Museum. The need for support of the Museum’s educational programs and tours has continued to grow. In addition to conducting tours of the permanent and changing Museum exhibits for thousands of visitors, volunteers enhance children’s learning opportunities with a variety of nature programs utilizing the Museum’s Discovery Lab and classroom. Engaging programs that include: Nevada’s Wildflowers, Fun with Fossils, Desert Adaptation, Fun with Butterflies Funky Fungi and Pines are Fine programs enrich students’ understanding of Nevada’s natural wonders and diversity.
Volunteers also can share the rich history of the State Capitol with visitors to Carson City. Tours provide guests with information on the Nevada Lincoln portrait, the unique State Library octagon, and the first Legislative chambers which housed the Nevada Assembly and State Senate.
In addition to helping the Museum fulfill its mission, volunteers also receive an enriching learning experience. Training is provided to volunteers by a number of experts on all aspects of Nevada history, American Indian culture, and natural history. Mentoring opportunities with current guides further enhance volunteers’ skills with additional information and stories. The Museum’s exceptional professional staff works closely with the Friends members to share inside information on Museum exhibits, lectures, construction projects, and other developments.
