The Capital City’s military police element – the 137th Military Police Detachment – is set to become the Nevada Army Guard’s next unit to support an international mission.

About three dozen of the unit’s military policemen and women are set to deploy to Romania this summer and support European Command.

The Soldiers are set to perform law and order missions on an Army base located in Romania. Law and order missions on the base will include: force protection, physical security and anti-terrorism measures.

UPDATE 4:14 p.m. the man has, thankfully, agreed to come down safely. First responders are with him now. The freeway will reopen shortly.

Nevada State Police NHP Troopers have been called to shut down traffic on I-580 near Fairview and Koontz due to a potential suicide threat.

A man is reportedly standing on the Koontz overpass threatening to jump. First responders are on scene with him.

Great Basin Brewing Company opened its newest location in Carson City today at 11 a.m. in what was previously the Union.

The Annual Stewart Father’s Day Powwow was canceled last year due to COVID-19, but is returning this year along with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum.

The annual powwow is free and open to the public, and includes food vendors, competition dancing, arts and crafts vendors, and dry camping.

CARSON CITY — The 2022 Primary Election is just around the corner and so is the summer weather. As the days get warmer, more organized events will take place at Mills Park, including voting, that may make for crowded parking areas during polling hours.

Beginning Friday, May 27, Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe will open at 7 a.m. to help ease traffic congestion on Highway 28. Visitors are advised to arrive at or after opening time. There is limited space to wait for the park to open. Vehicles parked on the shoulder or blocking the highway may receive a citation.

Creativity and talent abound in the Capital City Arts Initiative’s "Fresh Outlook 2022" exhibition happening in Carson City.

UPDATE 4:18PM: According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, there was an electrical short that burned a small section of insulation on the fire truck, which is now at the fleet division where they are investigating the cause of the short. Damage appears to be very minor.

CARSON CITY — Fourteen Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently attended and participated at the State Business Leadership Conference in Reno, where they walked away with 26 top 10 finishes in business career related events. Out of those 26 awards, nine students placed in the top four, which qualified them to participate at Nationals in Chicago, Ill., June 28 to July 3.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help identifying two suspects involved in a vehicle burglary and credit card fraud that happened Saturday, May 21. The victim’s vehicle was broken into while she was away for a hike in the Spooner Summit area.

Few people at Western Nevada College’s don’t know Larry Manuel Garcia-Castillo by now. You might have met or noticed him during a student government activity, a Student Life function such as the Easter Fiesta or a Student Leadership Summit. Or maybe he took the time to help you locate a class on campus, or if you’re really fortunate, he confidently shared one of his trademark poses.

On Saturday, May 15, 2022, at around 3:56 p.m., Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to reports of a motorcycle crash on SR-341 near Lyon County mile marker 5 in Lyon County.
