In observance of the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, 2022, local firefighters and Sparky the Fire Dog made special appearances and presentations at several elementary schools in the Carson City School District.

This evening, looking out my back door, I could see that the moon was very bright and cast nice crisp shadows. Today is the full moon for October and the next one will be Nov. 9. As I spied the moon I saw that Jupiter was just above and to the right and was also very clear. Several of Jupiter's moons were also visible.

LAKE TAHOE, CA — Lake Tahoe is famous for its blueness. The growth and spread of algae is one reason blue lakes around the world can go green in the summer.

Algae forms the base of many food webs, and most algae in Lake Tahoe, though sometimes unattractive, does not pose a health risk to people or animals that enjoy the Lake.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a different story.
