1884 Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar travels across the country
During the Friends of the Nevada State Museum recent Silver State Speakeasy fundraising event, the raffle of an uncirculated 1884 Morgan silver dollar resulted in the coin traveling across the United States.
Raffle winter Susan Fisher and her husband of Memphis, TN have visited this area in the past concentrating on Reno and Lake Tahoe areas. This year, her stepfather, David Quackenbush, asked her to come to Carson City specifically to visit the U.S. Mint. He also asked her to purchase several medallions that were minted on the historic Coin Press Number One.
While at the Museum, the Fishers purchased raffle tickets for the 1884 Morgan silver dollar coin. She said she purchased one ticket for herself and one for her stepdad, but put her name on both. She wasn’t sure who really won, but said she was going to let her stepdad keep it for now.
Other medallion and coin winners for the evening were JoAnn Grace — Sutro Tunnel Collector Medallion for best costume and Dan Morris — 75th Museum Anniversary 1 oz. silver medallion door prize.
The event was an outstanding success raising more than $5,000 for FNSM. These funds enable the organization to continue supporting the Museum’s archival and educational mission serving the community and state. The FNSM thanks the community, especially the participants, raffle prize donors, and Governor’s Mansion staff for their support of this annual fund raiser which generates much of the group’s funding.
