Carson City School District is pleased to announce Lucas Valdez, 14-year-old eighth grader at Eagle Valley Middle School, as a winner of GreenUP!’s Golden Pinecone Sustainability Youth Leadership Award. He was given the award in Reno April 13, 2023.

A 26-year-old man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of second DUI and basic speeding, both misdemeanor offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Brianna Cross will go on to represent Carson City in the competition for Miss Nevada. She is working to promote her Community Service Initiative Project: Raise the B.A.R.R. Obtaining better resources for recovery.

UPDATE 6 a.m.: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong tells KOLO that the incident involved a vehicle pursuit in which suspects in the vehicle that caused the crash had stolen merchandise from a south Carson Street clothing store. The two killed in the crash were passengers in the suspect vehicle. A third passenger and the driver were taken to Renown. The driver of the victim vehicle was also taken to Renown. Their condition is unknown.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol were called Sunday night to a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of East William and North Saliman.

This is the time of year where we notice damage to landscape plants and lawns. We may immediately jump to the conclusion that a pest caused the problem. Amazingly, most problems are not caused by an insect or critter.

The Carson City School District in partnership with the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention will host a training course titled “safeTALK” to help parents learn how to talk to their students through crisis. The training will be held April 29 at 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the library at Carson High School.

To reduce hazardous fuels on National Forest System and city-owned lands, sheep will be released on Friday, April 21, 2023, in the West Carson Fuels Project area located on the west side of Carson City. These sheep will consume cheatgrass and other non-native vegetation on Carson City Open Space and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District.

Working directly for Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, CCSSAR employs Unit and Personally Owned Vehicles in response to missions as varied as wilderness and urban searches, evidence searches, wildfire evacuations, and public relations events. The Unit also supports the CCSO Operations and Detective Divisions, Carson City Fire Department, Carson City Parks, BLM, USFS, and neighboring counties.

Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space has contracted Sierra Nevada Construction to perform asphalt pathway maintenance in the Long Ranch neighborhood beginning Thursday, April 27.

Partnership Carson City is conducting its bi-annual Drug Round-up Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise awareness around the impacts of keeping unused and expired prescription drugs in households.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) will begin to offer free soil testing for homeowners within the Carson River Superfund Site. Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this program is voluntary and free-of-charge.

This month’s student senior of the month from Pioneer Academy, Faith Key, is not the kind of person to sit around and watch when something is not right. Faith would rather create some change and help make a positive difference for the world around her.

In recognition of National Donate Life Month in April, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is continuing to elevate the donate-life message for Nevadans. In addition to debuting a custom donate-life decals on a sheriff’s office vehicle for the second year in a row, the sheriff’s office was recently presented with an award from the Nevada Donor Network—a statewide not-for-profit organization that facilitates organ, tissue, and cornea donations statewide.

D is short for D.O.G. and we think he’ll be the paw-fect one for you! D was surrendered to the Carson Shelter in mid-February because his previous owners were moving. He enjoys playing fetch and loves tennis balls.

A 29-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday morning for violating her bail conditions and driving without a valid license after deputies stopped the car she was driving for being without license plates.

When deputies made contact with the woman, they asked if she had a temporary registration card for the vehicle which she said she did not. She did, however, provide insurance for the vehicle.

The second annual Great Basin Scottish Highland Games return to Sparks. Hosted by the Northern Nevada Throwing Company, which focuses on bringing the love and heritage of the Scottish Highlands to Northern Nevada through heavy athletics and cultural celebration.

LTI Educational Commonwealth is pleased to announce our production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The cast is comprised of youth ages 10 and up who have been studying Shakespeare's plays and influence in their class this year.

In 2019, the graduation rate for Carson High School was at nearly 94.6 percent; however, only two years later in 2021, the rate dropped significantly with only 88.7 percent being awarded their diploma.

Thank you to the community for your overwhelming response to the first class offered at the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum. This class, "Cooking with Nettles" taught by Melanie Smokey, Washoe/Yomba cultural plant medicine expert, is now full and closed to registration. We will post a notice if this class is offered again in the future.

In honor of National School Library month, which takes place throughout April, as well as National Library Week, which takes place April 23-29, Carson City librarians are celebrating with a number of activities for their students.

This is the 38th annual celebration, which will lead up to Nevada Reading Week in the first week of March.
