Whimsical Adventure: 'Seussical Jr.' production hits the stage this weekend in Carson City
“Oh, the places you’ll go!” Wild Horse Children’s Theater in Carson City invites you on a journey through the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss with their upcoming production of “Seussical, Jr.” This magical extravaganza, filled with toe-tapping tunes and wild characters, is a must-see for all ages!
Running for two weekends, from April 21 to April 30 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall in Carson City, this show is based on the books of beloved children’s author, Dr. Seuss. The talented cast of young actors will bring to life Seuss’ most iconic characters from his books, including Green Eggs and Ham, Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, Horton Hatches the Egg, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
With Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the award-winning creators of many Broadway hits, at the helm, “Seussical, Jr.” promises to be a fanciful and unforgettable experience. The Cat in the Hat serves as the narrator, leaping into the action to create fun, while Horton the Elephant endeavors to protect the people of Who-ville who live on a tiny speck of dust.
The show, like its full-length forebear, is one big mashup of Seuss stories and characters. Narrated by the Cat in the Hat (played by Azevedo Azevedo and Chastity Ward), the story begins with Horton the elephant (played by 13-year-old Micah Giron), who discovers a world of Whos living inside a speck of dust.
While guarding the abandoned egg left in his care by Mayzie La Bird (played by Lillian Bentley and Olivia Briggs), he must also guard the Whos, whom he carries around on a clover, against the dangers of the world while everyone else in it believes him crazy. Only his friend Gertrude McFuzz (Aila McCaskill and Anna Bogh) stands by him through ridicule, danger and even a trial.
According to Director Carol Scott, this production offers something for viewers of every age. The music is delightful, the set design is imaginative and vibrant, and the impression young talent in our community never fails to astonish us. The show beautifully weaves together the spectacle and valuable teachings of Seuss, and Scott eagerly anticipates sharing it with the community.
Performances are scheduled for Friday, April 21 and April 28 at 7 p.m., Saturday April 22 and Saturday, April 29 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 23 and April 30 at 2:00 pm.
