Carson City area casinos report a loss in gaming profit for April, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports Monday. Meanwhile, Reno and South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos saw big gains.

Statewide, gaming profits in Nevada fell slightly by 0.16 percent. Nevada casinos made $854,293,047 for the month. Carson City area casinos, which include those in Minden and Gardnerville, fell 2.66 percent, taking in April gaming profits of $7,883,290.

Reno casinos reported a gaming "win" of $44,143,808, up 15.3 percent over April 2012 figures.

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.

An open house to welcome the new Carson City District Manager, Bernadette Lovato, will be held Tuesday, June 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road in Carson City, Nev. The district has approximately 110 full time employees and manages about 4.8 million acres of federal public lands in 11 counties throughout western Nevada and eastern California through the Sierra Front and the Still Water field offices.

Several lightning-sparked fires have been reported Sunday throughout northern and western Nevada and the Sierra, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Fires were also reported in Alpine County near Markleeville and Grover Hot Springs.

UPDATE 9:35AM: NV Energy reports power being restored after Sunday's wind storm knocked trees into power lines and homes. Spokesman Karl Walquist said all circuits are operating after crews worked through the night. Walquist said all but maybe be one or two homes are without power.

UPDATE 9:30PM: About 2,000 NV Energy customers remain without power Sunday night after high winds battered Carson City during a thunderstorm, snapping trees into power lines and homes.

UPDATE: One person died in a vehicle crash in Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe across from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Station Sunday afternoon, confirmed Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Barbara Stapleton.

At least three others were injured, according to NHP dispatchers. Both lanes of Highway 50 were closed.

One victim was taken by ground ambulance to Carson City where they were transported by Calstar. The crash was reported to NHP at 2:55 p.m. at 875 Highway 50. The vehicles involved were blocking both lanes of traffic, according to the dispatcher.

Let’s face it. It can be pretty easy to ignore a bunch of politicians getting together in Carson City to pass bills. Life is hectic, and if you paid absolutely no attention to what happened during the 120-day legislative session or did not know a legislative session had occurred, that’s all right.

Here is the Carson City area road and maintenance report for the week of June 10-16:

Due to continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive. Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way.

Bennett Avenue is closed between Ponderosa Drive and Bigelow Drive. Bigelow Drive has been permanently closed between Roland Street and Bennett Avenue. Detours are signed.

More than 1,100 selections went by in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft before the Baltimore Orioles chose Western Nevada College freshman outfielder Conor Harber on Saturday.

It marked the ninth straight year that the Wildcats have had at least one player taken in the 40-round draft. The 2009 draft was the only other time that the Wildcats didn’t have multiple current or past players selected.

Harber, who could play another season at WNC, start a pro career in the minors or sign with a four-year school, was taken by the Orioles with the 1,149th pick in the 38th round.

UPDATE 6:23PM: KTVN reports on its Facebook page most of the customers affected by Saturday's power outage in Carson City have had their power restored. Crews are still working to restore power to the areas that remain, but say it could still take several hours.

UPDATE 2:33PM: About 3,200 NV Energy customers are without power Saturday afternoon in north Carson City after a canopy blew into a power line causing it to arc.
