Serving hungry Carson City residents and visitors breakfast and lunch since 1980, the Cracker Box restaurant has received the coveted TripAdvisor Award of Excellence for 2013. The award recognizes restaurants that consistently receive high ratings from travelers and that rank in the top performing 10 percent of business worldwide.

Jerry Massad, who has owned and operated the Cracker Box diner for more than 33 years, says the honor was a pleasant surprise.

Carson City patrol officers who stopped a Suburban for speeding on Monday morning found drugs and burglary tools inside the vehicle set to be impounded.

Two men were arrested and face multiple charges. The arrests were made at 7:24 a.m. in the 1000 block of Fairview. Alex Matthew Silva, 26, of Dayton faces felony drug possession charges and misdemeanor possession of burglary tools. The other is a 28-year-old Sparks man who faces misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed into law a bill that will help crack down on underage tobacco users in Nevada.

Beginning in October of this year, Nevada counties will have the option to adopt ordinances that would impose fines on individuals under the age of 18 for the possession or use of tobacco products. Senate Bill 177 was introduced by Senator James Settelmeyer of Minden.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval has scheduled a public ceremony at the capitol to sign AB67 at 4 p.m. today.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and other supports of the bill will join Sandoval as he signs AB67 into law. The bill establishes the crime of sex trafficking of children and adults, and makes victims eligible for state assistance and allows them to sue their traffickers. By doing so, the bill holds pimps accountable and protects the victims of sex trafficking.

Unseasonably hot temperatures, more characteristic of July, will prevail through the weekend with high temperatures near or exceeding records, the National Weather Service reports. Today's forecast high for Carson City is 95. The record, set back in 1926, was 96.

A few records are possible today with more widespread records Friday into the weekend as high pressure builds across the region. The forecast high for Carson City on Friday and Saturday is 99.

It’s now official: Systems Consultants, the private computer firm in Fallon that conducts the annual computerized drawings for Nevada’s big game hunting tags, has posted the results of the 2013 drawings at Internet website www.huntnevada.com for the whole world to see.

There were a whole bunch of winners and a heck of a lot more losers in this year’s drawings for tags for Pronghorn Antelope, Black Bear, Mule Deer, Rocky Mt. Elk, California Bighorn Sheep, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mt. Bighorn Sheep and Rocky Mt. Goat.

One man is dead and another was hospitalized, then jailed, after two separate heroin overdoses Wednesday, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

A code enforcement check Wednesday of a motorhome that was thought to be abandoned on a Carson City street turned out to have several guests living inside.

Between 15 to 20 domesticated rats and several babies were discovered running loose inside the otherwise unoccupied RV, which was parked on the side of the road near Lompa and Sherman lanes, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
