On Veterans Day and every day, may we be mindful of the enduring truth that freedom is not free. We owe many brave men, women, and their families an enormous debt. As a country, we should come together in agreement that our military veterans deserve to receive the benefits they were promised and earned.

The Oncology on Canvas Wine Reception will be a special evening of art, wine, appetizers, entertainment, silent auction, 50/50 mystery raffle and socializing. Meet Dr. Perez and take a tour of the facility. Local created art pieces along with pieces from the Lilly Oncology on Canvas National Tour will be on display.

The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, 6 p.m. at the Sierra Nevada Cancer Center, 1460 S. Curry Street in Carson City.

Carson Now reader Margie Quirk passed a Facebook message along to us tonight. In the photo is Studley as a young colt. He is the horse who began the controversy with all the horses rounded up in the Deer Run area of Carson City this winter and spring 2013.

The feisty youngster, fortunately, is safe now in Colorado. If you get the Travel Channel, tune in Sunday night, 10 p.m. PST. The network will be airing a segment covering wild horse round ups in Nevada.

More black bears looking to fuel up before bedding down for the coming winter were caught in Carson City by Nevada Department of Wildlife officials Friday and then sent back into the hills on Saturday.

A female black bear without cubs was trapped in west Carson City, an area that has seen it share of bears this fall. The female bear was a recapture from earlier in October when she was first caught in west Carson City.

Here is the Carson City road report for the week of Nov. 11-17: On Wednesday, Nov. 13, there will be lane closures on Fairview Drive between Carson Street and California Street from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. due to utility work. Flagger controlled traffic will be in effect.

There will be intermittent one-way flagger controlled traffic on Fifth Street between Saliman Road and the freeway overpass.

There will be sidewalk work along the south side of Silver Oak Drive between N. Carson Street and Imperial way. Please use caution.

All hands were on board Saturday as the Women's Council of the Builder's Association of Western Nevada answered the call to help two Carson City homeowners in need of upgrades and repairs.

Ramsey Circle homeowner Nora McGinley fought back tears as a team of local contractors with power tools and building materials arrived at her doorstep with one mission in mind: Lending a helping hand to a good neighbor.

"I'm so grateful. It's just wonderful to know there are people in our community who go out of their way on a Saturday to do something like this," said McGinley. "It's more than I ever imagined."

CARSON CITY — On occasion it becomes necessary for law enforcement to restrict access to an area where an emergency is taking place. Most of the time traffic is allowed to continue with minimal direction from on scene personnel.

Unfortunately though, sometimes it becomes a matter of necessity to block an entire roadway to traffic for both the safety of you, the motoring public and those who are working in the area which is blocked off.

Come spend the day and celebrate the full moon with us at our Festival of Earthly Treasures III and Healing Arts Fundraiser from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, November 17th at the Plaza Event Center, 801 S. Carson Street in Carson City. We will be featuring free interactive workshops, jewelry, healing arts, readings and silent auction. Raffles prizes will be given away every 30 minutes. Only $2 admission and kids 12 and under are free. All proceeds to benefit Esperanza Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit corporation dedicated to facilitating the healing of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in all of us.

Carson Middle School students, teachers and staff honored local veterans Thursday.

The event began with polite and enthusiastic student greeters who met guests and escorted them into the school gym for a reception of tasty treats and a Patriotic program. Veterans and guests were welcomed by Carson Middle School Choir Director Briana Valley and the CMS program emcees Melanie Proctor and Makayl Holloway.

Nevada’s Sesquicentennial is celebrating Veterans Day with statewide events Friday through Monday. Nevada residents and visitors are invited to join the celebration and demonstrate patriotism by honoring those who have fought for Nevada and the Country’s freedoms.
