I have mentioned in the past that I get questions from time to time about traffic related issues. Today I received one about the roundabouts in Carson City. The concern was that many drivers may not understand how they work.

The Empty Bowls project, a locally organized fundraiser that culminated at the Carson City Silver and Snowflake Festival on Dec. 6 and was initiated to bring awareness of local hunger issues, raised $2,722.35 for Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, which feeds, houses and provides services for more than 20,000 people in Carson City annually.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1977 has partnered with the Carson Nugget as well as various vineyards and vendors to present Winter Wine and All That Jazz, an evening of wine tasting, music, dancing, a live art demonstration, silent auction and raffles.

This annual fundraiser will be held on Saturday, January 18 at the Carson Nugget from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are $30 per person and are available for purchase at www.breweryarts.org. For more info call the Brewery Arts Center office at 775-883-1976

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company will hold auditions for the Broadway blockbuster "Chicago" on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Broadway blockbuster won six Tony Awards and has continued to be an international hit. It will play in seven performances on weekends, May 9-18, in Carson City.

Producer and director Stephanie Arrrigotti said parts are open for six leading roles and two dance troupes. “Those auditioning for the primary dance troupe need extraordinary dance ability and well-toned bodies,” she said.

Carson City will hold three public workshops this month that are designed to answer questions and solicit comments regarding a proposed 1/8th-cent sales tax to fund several infrastructure projects.

The money would help pay for a new multi-purpose athletic center, known as the “MAC,” a new animal services facility, and streetscape beautification and safety enhancements along the Carson City’s main commercial corridors and the downtown area.

Carson High School student Jody Ostrander has been selected for a Senate Page position in Washington, D.C.

There are 30 Senate Pages selected nationally each session. Jody, 16, will be leaving Carson City later this month and serve until June 6, 2014.

Average weekly wages in Nevada measured $829 the second quarter of 2013, the highest reading for the three-month period on record. Nevadans are earning 1.8 percent more than this time last year, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Bring in the small dogs and secure the lawn furniture, a cold front passing through the Sierra and western Nevada on Saturday will bring strong and gusty southwest winds to the Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Forecasters say the system will bring dangerous crosswinds along Interstates 80 and 580 as well as Highway 395 with travel likely impacted for high profile vehicles. A High Wind Warning has been issued by the weather service.

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division. Inspections through Jan. 7, 2014 include restaurants, fast food restaurants, a convenience store, bar and lounges, retail grocers and a non-profit organization that provides food to children.
