There were 26 traffic citations, three vehicle tows for license violations and zero arrests for driving under the influence during a saturation patrol by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday.

The patrol was along U.S. Highway 50 East, Saliman Road, East 5th Street and Fairview Drive, said Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

In addition, saturation deputies assisted with an injury crash at Pheasant and Fairview drives. The purpose of these events is to help keep our roadways safe from impaired and unsafe drivers, said McDaniel.

Carson City Public Works reports the following road maintenance report for the week of Jan. 20-26. West Fifth Street will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 21, between Nevada Street and Division Street during the mid-day. Detours will be signed.

On Monday, Jan. 20, there will be a lane closure on the south side of Northridge Drive between Eastridge Drive and Russell Way due to utility work. There will be flagger-controlled traffic. For the remainder of the work week, activity will move to the shoulder and no delays are expected.

A robot version of a smackdown will be held Saturday in Carson City during the 2014 Northern Nevada FIRST Tech Challenge.

Teams of high school and middle school students will compete using robots they have designed to complete various maneuvers at the Donald Reynolds Technology Center on the campus of Western Nevada Community College, 2201 West College Parkway.

Dennis Osborn, deputy Nevada Highway Patrol chief, will assume the duties as chief of the NHP beginning Monday. He replaces former NHP Chief Troy Abney who left the department in November 2013 after serving nearly 20 months with the agency.
The announcement was made today by Department of Public Safety Director James M. Wright.

The City staff drafted an agenda item that would increase sales tax by 1/8 of a cent.

This increase will help to fund various corridor projects; it will also allow the City to build the Animal Shelter, and the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. The allocated expense of all projects does not include any debt service fees, interest nor any maintenance, service fees, staffing, or other related cost after completion.
