Carson City sheriff's officers made felony arrests in two separate cases Friday involving possession of stolen property. In one arrest a man was in possession of an electronic tablet that was allegedly stolen from a Target store in Oregon and the other, a vehicle that was reported stolen Dec. 26.

Researchers based at UC Davis’ Tahoe Environmental Research Center, the University of Nevada, Reno and three other universities began working as the Rim Fire was still smoldering last summer.

Deputies see it everyday, drivers talking on their cell phones or texting while driving. What’s the big deal? Well for one thing, it is illegal but, it also distracts you from concentrating on the roadway and traffic ahead of you.

Five seconds to send a quick text is equal to the length of a football field when driving 55 miles per hour. That’s how long your eyes are off the road. The average text conversation lasts about three minutes.

Carson City ambulance and rescue crews responded this afternoon to a collision involving a truck and a moped. The moped rider was said to have injuries to his leg and abdomen and a Care Flight air ambulance was called to respond.

UPDATE: The structure fire at a Gentry Lane home is now under control, reports Carson City Assistant Fire Chief Tom Tarulli. The fire was situated in the high-peak roof area of the home. The cause has not yet been determined, he said.

Firefighters knocked it down within 30 minutes of the call. Damage to the home is between $80,000 to $100,000, said Battalion Chief John Arneson.

Carson City commuters can expect the following road detours, utility and shoulder work beginning Monday. The following road report is for the week of January 6-12:

Beginning Monday, January 6, through Friday, January 10, West Fifth Street will be closed between Nevada Street and Division Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Detours will be signed.

Community members interested in law enforcement or those who may have wondered how the Carson City Sheriff's Office operates, the Citizens Academy is an good opportunity to experience the wide range of duties at the department, said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The application deadline for the Carson City Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy is 5 p.m. Jan. 31, 2014. The next academy begins Feb. 5.
