While unemployment fell to 8.8 percent statewide in December, the lowest since November 2008, the jobless rate in Carson City climbed from 9.1 to 9.3 percent, according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation figures released Monday.

Unemployment rates for the state’s metropolitan areas, including Carson City, are not adjusted for seasonality therefore the overall decrease in jobless figures are outside the main population cores. Reno's unemployment went from 8.2 to 8.4 percent, and Las Vegas, 8.6 to 8.9 percent.

In fact, the No. 2 state for secondhand smoke was almost 10 percentage points behind Nevada.

Carson City Public Works provides this road report weekly. The following information applies to the period of Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2014.

Utility work will continue in the shoulder of the east side of Silver Sage Drive between Raven Circle and Nona Drive. There will be a lane shift during sidewalk construction, but traffic control will be in place and minimal delays are expected.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will hold a Communications Division exercise between 7 and 8 a.m. this morning. The radio transmissions that will go out over Carson City radio frequencies will be simulated only and not an actual incident in progress. The training exercise is expected to last 10 minutes.

Hours after an early morning fire at Lake Tahoe's north shore chewed about a half-acre on Forest Service land, a man in the Prison Hill area of Carson City lit some paper on fire to warm up and in doing so touched off a small blaze.

With persistent drought conditions and no clear sign of when the next rain and snowfall will be, fire officials say the potential for wildfires is worsening ever day and the public needs to be aware of the danger.
