What is identified as “The Orthodox Church” today is the original Christian Church established by Jesus Christ, handed down to His Apostles, and described in the pages of the New Testament. It was one Church until a split separated Orthodox East from Latin West in the eleventh century but the Orthodox Faith and practice has continued unaltered for two thousand years.

Cory Fleming, Alex Mingo, and Ryan and Justin Katausky, demonstrated extraordinary wit and determination as they successfully cracked the codes and deciphered the historical and geographical riddles in the renowned Nevada Day Treasure Hunt.

Various Carson City arts groups have long wanted to bring artistic expression to the downtown through mural art. There have been a few murals painted here and there over the years; however, much of that art has been overpainted leaving blank slates.

The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Bepsy Strasburg of Build2Win, a non-partisan community group that organizes workshops at convenient times to raise awareness of public policies, practices, and projects that affect the lives of Carson City residents.

Saturday, October 14th has been designated “White Cane Day” by the Carson City Host Lions Club. Lions will be available at the Market Street WalMart and Smith’s Food and Drug on East William Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds to support vision preservation as part of the annual White Cane Day.

Throughout October, Carson City's Michael Hohl Motor Company is collecting pet food donations in hopes of filling a pickup truck with food to support Feeding Pets of the Homeless.

The Gold Hill Hotel (as seen on Ghost Adventures and proclaimed the 8th most haunted location in Nevada) is hosting one night only an evening of fun, thrills, and chills celebrating our favorite holiday!

Carson City’s Rice Street Tattoo will be hosting a fundraiser at their shop this Friday, Oct. 13 to help Gardnerville resident Shannon Brown in her fight against breast cancer.

Only a few months ago, Brown was living life as normal when she found a small lump, about the size of a dime, in her left breast.

Mamas is a 5-year-old gal who has been at Carson City Nevada Humane Society for a few weeks. She has been pretty shy in the shelter environment and could use a little love.

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a public breakfast meeting every other month. The next meeting is Thursday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center.

Guest speakers include Ashle Doran, who will give a presentation on Comstock Youth Works' successful summer job skills and paid internship program for teens throughout Lyon County.

Last week, Carson High Schools Capitol FFA hosted its annual Cow Plop fundraiser. In this fundraising event, donors pay to buy a square inside of a cow’s pen.

If the cow poops on their respective square, the square’s sponsor will win $250.

Earlier this month, Carson High School’s soil judging team took first place at the statewide competition in Ely, taking them to nationals. Soil judging is a competition where teams compete to determine the quality, water retention, classification, and consistency of the soil of a 5-foot deep hole.

Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine will be the featured speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.

The meeting takes place Tuesday, October 10th, at noon, in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.

Parents, do you need a night out? Well, on October 13, you can have just that!

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space along with Capital Kids before and after school program will be hosting Parents Night Out October 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tee Jay's Corner Cafe will be hosting its 3rd annual "Chowder for Charity" on behalf of FISH, Friday October 6th from opening 10 a.m. till closing at 8 p.m.

The New England style clam chowder is free for a donation to FISH. All proceeds will be given to FISH.

The Main Street Gardnerville Annual Coffin Races & Fall Festival is hosted every year at Heritage Park in beautiful Gardnerville, NV.

The festival offers something for everyone in the family from Harvest in the community Heritage Park Garden, racing a coffin with a team of friends, or building your own Scarecrow at the East Fork Gallery Scarecrow fest. The event will also host dancers and various teams of talented performers.

Alexandra Llamas-Cruz is a standout Senior Senator in every way. She is thoughtful, hardworking, dedicated and determined, but also a strong contributor to the school, community and to her family.

Alex is an incredible student carrying a weighted GPA of 4.6 and participating in CHS’s Advanced Placement (AP) classes. She has been honored by the College Board with an AP Scholar Award as well as the Hispanic National Recognition Award and is set to graduate with 8 AP courses successfully completed.

The next Carson City Build2Win workshop is on Oct. 21 featuring Ballot Question 3 regarding (a) Open Primaries and (b) Ranked Choice Voting.

The 2023-24 4-H Information Night is happening this Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.
