Two million riders and 40 years of V&T Railroad legacy in Virginia City

Looking good at 40 is not a problem for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, based in Virginia City. Dubbed “Queen of the Short Lines,” the V&T’s history goes back to 1938 when a 17-year-old Robert C. Gray was a passenger on the last V&T excursion to Virginia City from Carson City, Nev.

Carson City Chamber to unveil public art by StClair this Saturday

Continuing in the vein of placing public art in public places such as that placed along the I-580 corridor as part of the freeway construction, the Carson City Chamber has commissioned local metal artist Robbie StClair to create a piece of uniquely Nevada art to be unveiled and dedicated this Saturday, May 23 at noon in front of the Chamber building located at 1900 S. Carson Street within the complex of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

A Lecture at Morley's Books

Heavy-hitting national touring bands land at Brewery Arts Center this week

Music fills the 3 halls of the Brewery Arts Center every week, but this week will bring the biggest musical events in recent BAC history. Carson City's Mile High Summer Jazz band camp begins June 1

Mile High Jazz Band Association, in cooperation with Carson Middle School, is starting a new, one-week Jazz Camp, with sessions for middle- and high-school musicians, June 1-5, in the band room at Carson Middle School, 1140 W King St in Carson City. Both sessions are open to students from Carson City and surrounding areas in northern Nevada and California.

Christina Thomas is a woman of Paiute, Shoshone, and Hopi descent who has been acknowledged as an emerging leader of her people.

Christina explores the performing arts of traditional singing, drumming and dancing. She has given lessons in the Paiute language, tells traditional stories, shares knowledge of traditional foods and plants, and also discusses the history of the Great Basin native peoples; and gives her unique perspective on contemporary Native American issues.

Sculptor Pasha Rafat to speak at Nevada Arts Council OXS reception May 11

Light sculptures and constructions by Las Vegas artist Pasha Rafat will illuminate the Office eXhibition Series Gallery May 11 to July 10. A recipient of a Nevada Arts Council 2015 Artist Fellowship Grant, Rafat holds a bachelor of science in design from Arizona State University and a Master of Fine arts from California State University, Fullerton. He is a professor at University pf Nevada, Las Vegas where he teaches photography and multimedia courses. The public is invited to an exhibit reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

HSSDC monthly west coast swing dance and lesson

Saturday May 30th is HSSDC Monthly Dance in the Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. Carson City. This month will be our featured instructor will be Steve Dorman, with the intermediate lesson starting at 6:30 pm. Dancing starts at 7:30pm. Steve Dorman will also DJ.

“Forevermore,” featuring mixed media by Su Limbert of Las Vegas, debuts at the Legislative eXhibition Series Gallery May 18 to June 5 in the Nevada Legislative Building.

The artist said “Forevermore” is a personal narrative exploring themes of childhood, nature and the complexities of relationships. The exhibit is a selection of work from Limbert's recent solo show of oil paintings on wood cutouts at the Trifecta Gallery in Las Vegas.

RSVP Spring Fun Fair returns to Mills Park this weekend

For the 30th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. (RSVP) will sponsor the Spring Fun Fair and Carnival at Mills Park this Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10.

The carnival opens at 5 pm on Thursday and Friday, at 2 pm on Saturday and Noon on Sunday. All proceeds go toward services for Carson City seniors designed to assist them to remain independent and in their own homes with dignity.

Good Luck Macbeth Theatre continues its 2015 season with one of its highly anticipated shows of the season, Shiner. Shiner, by promising young playwright Christian Durso, follows two 13-year-olds Jake and Margot, in 1994, who form their own grunge-music fan club to celebrate all things Nirvana. Soon Jake and Margot become bound as much by their shared insecurities as by their music. The two teens make a pact to die happy. All they need to do is see Nirvana live in concert and then they will jump off the 101 overpass.

Come on down and take a ride on the Edwards Motorcar Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rides are $4 for Adults; $2 for Children ages 4-11 and museum members; and FREE for Children ages 3 and under. The first Sunday of the month always sees a pancake breakfast at the Elk’s Club; let them take care of the cooking and clean-up!

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    Can you believe that it’s the last day of April? The last few months have zipped right along while we were waiting for winter, but now it’s time to start embracing spring before summer arrives. The annual Genoa Cowboy Festival kicks off tonight with a Barn Dance and Bar-be-que, and Virginia City hosts its famous Chili on the Comstock competition this weekend, but Carson City has a great line up of fun for you, as well, this weekend. Start out with some great live music tonight with the Trippin King Snakes at Carson Cigar Co., Chris Costa at Living the Good Life, or Glen Eagle’s regulars, Terri Campillo and Craig Fletcher.

    Let the exploring begin! Nevada Magazine’s inaugural Silver State Scavenger Hunt begins Friday, May 1, giving adventurers a chance to discover some of the most exciting destinations in Nevada. Nevada Magazine has split the state into two zones — Northern and Southern — and chose 14 notable places in each.
