Hold onto your broomstick, this weekend is bound to sweep you up in Halloween fun. First you’ll need a pumpkin. The Harvest Train Festival and Pumpkin Patch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to start. Take the costumed kids to a Trunk or Treat at Advantage Auto Works off Old Hot Springs Road courtesy of the members of Carson Cruise Meet and Greet. Team up with Mark Twain for a ghostly tour of our haunted downtown or you can choose a shorter tour that’s perfect for families. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the candy corn.

Carson City's WNMTC to present ‘The Little Mermaid’ in November

Magic is bursting from Under the Sea as the acclaimed Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company (WNMTC) puts the final glittering touches on Disney’s Academy Award-winning “The Little Mermaid.” This Broadway blockbuster will play at the Carson City Community Center weekends, Nov. 4 through 20.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Nevada Northern Railway Running Popular Polar Express Train Rides

Nevada Writers Hall of Fame: Gailmarie Pahmeier, Willy Vlautin and Tod Goldberg to be honored

The 29th annual Nevada Writers Hall of Fame event honors Nevada’s finest authors and recognizes emerging writers for their work. This year, the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame will welcome Gailmarie Pahmeier, Reno’s first poet laureate, and Willy Vlautin, song writer and author of four highly-recognized novels. Tod Goldberg, author of the comedic crime novel “Gangsterland,” is the 2016 Silver Pen Recipient.

The 2016 Carson City Creepy Short Horror Film Competition is now registering teams. Make a scary short film in just one week. On Oct. 19 at 12 noon, all registered teams will receive their prompts — a prop, a sound effect and a line of dialogue. Exactly one week later, they must turn in their finished short horror film ranging between 5 and 8 minutes in length.
