Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7: Things to do around Carson City

Are you ready for some football? Maybe you’re just a fan of the commercials. Either way, today is the big game between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Carson City will be hopping with gridiron parties, beverages and hot wings at bars, restaurants, and casinos. Start the day with a pancake breakfast at the Elks Club. For those who aren’t a pigskin fan, consider playing a few rounds of bingo to benefit the Carson Animal Shelter Initiative.

When Shirley Ling moved to Carson City 13 years ago, one of her first stops was to check out what activities were offered at the senior center. She found friendship and recreation, playing some pool here and there. But about six years ago, she found her real niche, playing table tennis.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

Radon education program at Carson City Senior Center

As part of National Radon Action Month, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is holding a free presentation of its Radon Education Program at the Carson City Senior Center, 901 Beverly Dr., on Monday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.

In addition to information on radon, the event will feature free radon test kits.

At Debug Computers where, in exchange for a donation to Holiday with a Hero, you can get a photo with the man in red. The Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to grab a candy cane, some hot cocoa, and tell him what you’d like to find under the tree. Photographs with Santa are available at the Carson Mall Wednesday through Sunday. Genoa’s annual Breakfast with Santa has three seatings beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday is always ideal for relaxing: comfy pajamas, turkey leftovers, and setting up decorations around the house are all good ideas. Grab the whole family for a free concert at the United Methodist Church. Holiday favorites sung by women’s choir ‘Bella Voce’ will get you in the spirit.

Carson City Senior Center honored Veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Salute to Our Veterans Lunch at the Senior Center. With over 200 in attendance, the event paid tribute and respect to our Veterans with opening remarks by Mayor Bob Crowell, Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain.

Virginia City and Reno honor veterans Wednesday with annual Veterans Day parades

Veterans Day Parades will be held in Virginia City and Reno on Wednesday. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Virginia City holds its annual Veterans Day Parade to honor those who have served and currently serve our country.
