Dealers, collectors, admirers and amateurs will find fun at the 2015 Carson City Mint Coin Show and Fair. Professionals will buy, sell and trade money and offer expertise in a lecture series during the two-day event Aug. 21-22.

Protecting bat habitat across Nevada, and why doing so is good for all, is the topic of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s August program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 27 presented by Jenni Jeffers.

Nevada is home to 23 species of bats. Its 250,000 abandoned mines have become important artificial roost sites for a large portion of our bat population for at least a part of their life. Jeffers will share how important bat habitat is protected and show photos of the species using these abandoned mines.

This fourth Thursday of July has been declared National Refreshment Day; teamed up with National Hot Dog Day and Vanilla Ice Cream Day, today should be yummy. More good eats can be found at the Farmers Market in Dayton. All you can eat wings at Firkin and Fox is a popular way to spend a Thursday, or sample something exotic at curry-tasting at Foodies Bystro inside the Brewery Arts Center.

I’m not going to tell you what to do, but if you’ll accept a suggestion, find yourself a hamburger. Poetry, art, and theater today in Carson City. All day long, the CCAI exhibit, Tuscarora, will be visible in the Sierra Room as the Board of Supervisors conduct their meeting. Head over to the Legislature for ‘RenoScapes,’ the final SENarts ‘Works of Artists’ program this season; check out the LXS Exhibit by artist Dawn Dot Star while you are there, it will be changing next week. Teens are invited to learn some acting and improv skills at the Carson City Library this afternoon. Nevada Arts Council Fellowship winners, Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley, will be sharing their poetry and honored at a reception today at Western Nevada College.

Thursdays get busy in Carson City. You can choose the Legislative Showdown Basketball game at Carson High and watch the battle of the Donkeys vs. Elephants. The WNC Wildcats take on the College of Eastern Utah this afternoon on the baseball field. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world. What do Yellowstone National Park and Iceland have in common with Nevada? Find out April 23 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City when Dr. Chip Carroon presents a slide lecture on "Geothermal Features of Yellowstone, Iceland and Nevada."

The horticulture world is fascinating with many topics to explore. Did you know that “the average carrot travels over 1,800 miles to get to our dinner plate?” Or that “93 percent of our food dollar pays processors, packagers, distributors, wholesalers, truckers and the rest of the infrastructure that a global food system demands?”

Finally, with the fact that “preschool children served home-grown produce are more than twice as likely to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day as kids who rarely eat home-grown produce,” more people are interested in growing their own.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

Film footage taken 95 years ago as troops crossed the U.S. to protect the West Coast shows the early role of the Lincoln Highway. The Nevada State Museum will screen the film when historian Jim Bonar, director of the Nevada chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association, speaks in Carson City at the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26.

The ‪Mike Thomas‬ ‪‎Lecture‬ Series presents The Future of Earth on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Plaza Hotel and Event Center at 801 S. Carson St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes appetizers and a no host bar.

The Future of Earth is a highly speculative topic examining the possible scenarios that could spell out the end of our planet. This is a fascinating, and perhaps chilling, presentation.

Once upon a time in Nevada, a Reno tailor named Jacob Davis wrote a letter to Levi Strauss about his pocket rivets, and thus the blue jean was born. Coincidentally, today is Strauss’ birthday. Once upon a time in Nevada, Buffalo Bill Cody was just a kid riding for the Pony Express. It’s his birthday, too. Fun fact: Cuba Crutchfield, a trick-rope cowboy with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, is buried in Carson City’s Lone Mountain Cemetery. Once upon a time in Nevada, a man was shot in Reno.

Angela Sullivan will present a journey into the Tibetan Buddhist heart of the Upper Mustang Region of Northern Nepal during a lecture at Carson City Library.
The public is welcome to join Angela for a virtual trek along ancient pilgrimage routes that cover more than 250 miles and a visit to the ancient walled city of Lo Mantang, the royal seat of the Kingdom of Lo.

The next installment of the Mike Thomas Lecture Series is 'Tesla: Eccentric Genius' at the Plaza Hotel, Friday, Feb. 13 at 7pm. Doors will open at 6:30pm, the lecture will cost $5 and light appetizers will be served.

The life of Nicola Tesla is the story of one of the greatest minds in history. He was a troubled man, fighting his own demons, while expanding the limits of science with ideas far beyond his time.

Carson City has some great lectures going on today. Sierra Nevada Forums is presenting ‘Lions and Tracking and Bears, OH MY’ about the incredible animals in our foothills. ‘A Short History of Virginia City’ is to be found at the Nevada State Museum, followed by a book signing by Authors Ron and Susan James.

Professor Paul Wender has made many highly significant original contributions to synthetic and bioorganic chemistry, including the successful use of compounds found in nature for development of medications to fight AIDS, Alzheimer’s and cancer. He will talk about his work Feb. 12, 7 p.m., in the Glick Distinguished Discover Lecture Series at the Milt Glick Ballroom in the Joe Crowley Student Union.

Nevada writers Ron and Susan James bring stories from their latest book “A Short History of Virginia City” to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.

Engaging speakers and experts in the state’s heritage, the couple will share historic Nevada tales of mining and the Old West. Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.

Man-made Wonder is the follow up to the Mike Thomas’ "Natural Wonders" lecture series. It arrives at the Plaza Hotel and Event Center in Carson City on Friday, Jan. 9. This free lecture is filled with many beautiful images of amazing works of architecture found around the globe.

The Mike Thompson Lecture Series continues tonight at the Plaza Hotel and Event Center with "D-Day: The Invasion of Europe." Free to the public, this slide show and lecture will begin at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Lectures are held on the second Saturday of every month.

The Brewery Arts Center is in the planning stages for hosting a new lecture series in the Masonic Ballroom called The History Talks. Starting in January, we are planning on reserving the second Friday of the month for those who have pictures, artifacts or simply a story to tell regarding specific subjects related to Carson City/Nevada.

The public is invited to attend the Nevada State Museum's Frances Humphrey Lecture Series featuring The Mysterious Snow Plant, by Pat King, PhD, botanist, naturalist, and dedicated museum volunteer. November also marks the 22nd anniversary of the museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series which began in 1992. The lecture runs from 6:30 - 7:30 pm; doors open at 6 pm.

Rediscover the amazing adaptations of the snow plant, one of the botanical specimens collected by John C. Frémont’s team on their 1843-44 expedition crossing the Sierras, at the Nevada State Museum on Thursday, Nov. 20 presented by Pat King, PhD. as part of the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series. Early arrival is recommended for "The Mysterious Snow Plant." The doors open at 6 p.m.; lecture to commence at 6:30 p.m. Museum admission is $8 for non-members and those over 17 years old.

September marks the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, legislation that protected more than 9 million acres of federal land. Marge Sill, considered by some to be the "mother of Nevada wilderness" will help the Nevada State Museum celebrate the occasion from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m., Mr. Whittell will pay a visit to the Gold Hill Hotel from his summer retreat at the Thunderbird Lodge on Lake Tahoe. He will undoubtedly have some stories that include Bill the Lion, his elephant Mingo, surviving World Wars I and II, and his six custom Duesenberg luxury cars.

Whittell is played by Steve Hale in first person and costume. In the Chautauqua you may be the first to hear about his big plans for his 30,000 acre estate and 27 miles of shoreline on the Lake!

Mike Thomas is a very engaging, knowledgeable lecturer who will be discussing Kit Carson and John Fremont "Pathfinders of the West," Friday, Sept. 12. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Lecture begins 7 p.m. in the Sierra room of the Carson City Plaza Hotel and Event Center.

His lectures have been entertaining, thought provoking, informative and even humorous. His delivery of the subject matter is precise and leaves you wanting for more.
