Slide lecture: Geothermal Features of Nevada, Yellowstone and Iceland
What do Yellowstone National Park and Iceland have in common with Nevada? Find out April 23 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City when Dr. Chip Carroon presents a slide lecture on "Geothermal Features of Yellowstone, Iceland and Nevada."
The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. and will focus on the geologic origin of geothermal and volcanic features of Yellowstone, Iceland and Nevada, three of the most geothermally active places in the world. Some geothermal and volcanic features in Nevada may not be as sensational as those elsewhere, but they have similarities in appearance and causative mechanisms. Spectacular images and geologic explanations will demonstrate the relationships between the various features within and between the three diverse locations.
Carroon was trained as a geologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed his doctorate degree at Stanford University. He worked in the geology industry for a short time and then in jobs that enabled him to travel extensively worldwide.
Carroon worked part time as a professional photographer in San Francisco. Currently, he follows his photography vocation by capturing landscape images during domestic and international travels. His presentation is part of the Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum on the fourth Thursdays of the month. Doors
open at 6 p.m. for exhibit viewing in the main building.
Museum members and children under 17 have free entry; nonmember admission is $8 per adult. The Museum is at 600 N. Carson Street, Carson City. For more information, contact Deborah Stevenson at dstevenson@nevadaculture.org or call 775-687-4810, ext. 237.
