Tony Argento performs Cowboy Poetry at Nevada State Museum Thursday

“Tuned up and twisted” is how Tony Argento describes his Western style poetry coming to the Nevada State Museum from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. Argento presents “Cowboy Poetry: "The Pride 'N' Spirit O' Nevada" as part of the museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series held at the museum on the fourth Thursday of every month, shedding new light on the state’s stories.

Live theatrical performance Thursday brings John C. Fremont to Nevada State Museum

John C. Fremont, the famed explorer who named, mapped and trekked the Great Basin comes to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in a theatrical presentation by Chautauquan Alastair Morley Jaques. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the one-person performance that is part of the monthly Frances Humphrey Lecture series.

WNC’s observatory offers free summer lecture series

Saturday evenings will be stellar this summer at the Jack C. Davis Observatory of Western Nevada College. A series of free slide lectures will be offered, June 14 through August 23. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. lectures.

Mike Thomas will offer lectures on June 14, July 12, August 9 and August 23. John Dykes will offer a lecture on July 26. On all Saturday evenings, the observatory will continue its Saturday Star Parties featuring free telescope viewing at the Carson City location.

Gold Hill Hotel series features talks on Sinatra's Tahoe gaming license, Nevada film history

The Gold Hill Hotel features two Nevada historical presentations this month, one involving the controversial Cal-Neva Lake Tahoe gaming license associated with Frank Sinatra and the other focusing on Nevada's place in film history.

The Tuesday Night Lecture Series on the Sinatra's gaming license will be held April 15 with the film presentation on April 29. Programs begins with dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. with the lecture at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for dinner and lecture and $5 for the lecture.

UNR lecture to feature Robert Ballard, discoverer of Titanic wreckage

Robert Ballard is known for his discoveries of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic, the battleship Bismarck, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and President John F. Kennedy's PT-109. The famous ocean explorer is the final speaker in this year’s Discover Science Lecture Series Thursday, April 3 at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Talk features stories of woman’s 2013 ride across Nevada on horseback

An avid equestrian with nearly 20 years experience, Samantha Szesciorka, her horse and dog set out from Baker, near the Utah border, to experience Nevada unplugged.

More than 450 miles and one month later, she arrived in Reno with a new appreciation for pioneering travelers who shaped the state more than 150 years ago. Her stories, images and insights are the focus of “The Nevada Discovery Ride: Pioneering in the Modern Age” lecture at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23.

Paul Franklin talks 19th century mining at Nevada State Museum Sept. 26

The Nevada State Museum hosts author Paul Franklin for September’s installment of the museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Franklin wrote “Anatomy of an Ingot,” a book that offers an investigation into the lives of three assayers responsible for a significant piece of silver in the 19th century.

The group briefly came together more than 130 years ago to form an assay and metallurgical laboratory that produced a mysterious silver ingot. Their careers intersected with early mining history in California and the Arizona and Nevada territories.

Annual Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social this Saturday

With tradition, community spirit and the launch of the Carson City jazz festival in mind, residents are welcome to a cool summer evening with music and sweet treats as the Carson City Historical Society hosts its annual Ice Cream Social this Saturday.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and feature live music, mountain men and quilters. The event takes place at Foreman-Roberts House Park, 1207 North Carson Street. The event is free to get in and costs $3 to enjoy the ice cream and cookies.

Dangberg story is topic of Nevada State Museum program July 25

As guest speaker at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Thursday, July 25, Buedel will discuss his work “Lost Legacy of Carson Valley: The Rise and Fall of the H.F. Dangberg Ranching Empire.”

To celebrate Archeological Awareness and Historical Preservation Month in May, the Carson City museum’s Frances Humphrey lecture series hosts archaeologist Mark Giambastiani, who will share new Nevada discoveries of artifacts dating at least 10,000 years old. His presentation “Recent Rock Art and Archaeological Discoveries in Lincoln County” is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23.

State Geologist James E. Faulds presents a thought-provoking question as the topic of the Nevada State Museum’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28. In “Why is Nevada in Hot Water: Tectonic Controls on Geothermal Activity in the Great Basin,” Faulds focuses on how fault systems initiate and evolve through time.

Geothermal studies enhance understanding of what controls hot fluids in the earth’s crust and aid in exploration and discovery of energy resources. Scientists study geologic faults and stress conditions to determine where to drill.

Michio Kaku, renowned physicist and TV science show host, comes to UNR

RENO, Nev. – Popular physicist and professor Michio Kaku is a co-creator of string field theory. He continues Einstein’s search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory and has published doctoral textbooks on quantum field theory. When he’s not working to explain the origin and evolution of the universe, he’s bringing science to the public.

Nevada State Museum Lecture: Early Prehistoric Textiles in the Western Great Basin

Ever wonder what people wore on their feet 13,000 years ago? A fascinating look at early prehistoric textiles in the Western Great Basin will be the theme of a Jan. 24 lecture presented by archaeologist Pat Barker beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City as part of its monthly Our Frances Humphrey Lecture Series.

Barker will discuss prehistoric textiles, showcasing sandals, mats, bags, basketry, and cordage from the collections of the Nevada State Museum. Learn how foot ware can inform us about how people lived in the past.

Frances Humphrey Lecture Series: Virginia City and its Archaeology

"Virginia City and its Archaeology: A Thirty Year Overview" will be presented Nov. 15 by State historic preservation officer Ron James. The presentation features a discussion, artifact viewing and signing of James' new book, "Virginia City: Secrets of a Western Past," published by University of Nebraska Press in conjunction with the Society of Historical Archaeology. University of Nevada, Reno to host Bill Nye The Science Guy

The public is invited to be entertained and educated with Bill Nye the Science Guy Sept. 6, the first of several presentations in the annual Discover Science Lecture Series at the University of Nevada, Reno. The College of Science and Associated Students of the University of Nevada are bringing Nye to the University’s Lawlor Events Center at 7 p.m. All tickets are $5 per person, available through the Lawlor box office.

The Donner Party Chronicles will be featured on Thursday, April 28, as part of the Francis Humphrey Lecture series given by Frank Mullen. The program is funded in partnership with Nevada Humanities with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Underground mine history lecture

The Nevada State Musum's Underground Mine Exhibit will be the subject of the December History Lecture series. This illustrated program will be presented by Curator of History, Bob Nylen.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the opening of the exhibit on Nevada Day, Oct 31, 1950. You will have the opportunity to see and explore through pictures, one of the finest mine replicas in the world. The program will be at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N.
