Car Wash Saturday in Gardnerville to benefit Douglas Marching Band trip to Holiday Bowl

The Douglas Tiger Marching Band will hold a fundraising car wash on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walgreens, 1342 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.
The car wash will be to raise money to help students pay for the cost of their trip to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Greater Nevada Credit Union will match the first $1,000 raised.

Pence loves elevation, Panik and Adrianza do well in rehab loss to Aces

Hunter Pence continued his AAA assault last night in Reno by hitting his second home run in as many nights at once again a Giants' friendly Greater Nevada Field.

I think he loves the thin air and elevation.

Pence came into the game batting a modest .500 (8 for 16) and added 2 more RBI to his total since being on his rehab assignment giving him 6 in 6 games. It was his third home run since being with Sacramento.

Pence played a full nine innings for a second straight night which have a lot of people believing his return to San Francisco is extremely close.

Carson City area Boy Scouts to host annual car and truck show fundraiser

Signups underway for Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament August 27

Carson City Soroptimist seeks players, tee or green sponsors, and raffle prize donors for its 15th Stroke to Help Golf Tournament. Scheduling conflicts have moved the annual fundraiser a month ahead of its usual date, and at a new venue as well.

On July 27 at 7:05 PM the Reno Aces will play the Sacramento River Cats on the Greater Nevada Field in Reno. As a way to raise money for the Carson City Library, the Friends of the Carson City Library are currently selling ticket vouchers at $16 for Left Field Reserve.

Carson City's Seeliger Singers to perform National Anthem at Aces game

The Seeliger Singers, Seeliger Elementary School’s choir directed by Mary Law, will perform the National Anthem at the May 31 Reno Aces baseball game.

“It’s exciting,” said Thomas Burchett, 11. “We’re singing in front of a whole bunch of people.”

The excitement is intense and contagious at Carson High School as students strive to make sure they get a copy of this year’s award-winning Carneta yearbook, volume number 94.

A mere seven days of school are all that remain and students are focused on the conclusion of the 2015-2016 school year at Carson High. Everyone is wearing a smile even though more final exams are still to come.

UNR seismology lab: Saturday's magnitude 3.9 one of 300 earthquakes near Gerlach

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno reported a magnitude 3.9 earthquake located near the communities of Gerlach and Empire, about 75 miles north of Reno. The earthquake occurred at 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The magnitude 3.9 is the largest of just over 300 earthquakes that have been located in the area since April 20.

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

Senator Square: Scott Vickrey named Carson High School's Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Scott Vickrey, the 2016 CHS Teacher of the Year, and Tami Burgoon, the CHS Classified Employee of the Year for 2016. Becoming Teacher of the Year is no easy task at Carson High School. With 104 teachers, not including other staff members, the CHS Teacher of the Year Award is an accomplishment most teachers will never receive, so winning an award like this required a great many people to say a great thing or two about Scott Vickrey.

The Reno Aces Baseball Club and Professional Sports Catering have revamped and reinvented the menus at Bugsy’s BBQ and Duffy’s Ale House within Greater Nevada Field’s premises. Additional game day concepts for the 2016 season include three new signature concession brands and partnerships with local food hotspots, including Wild Garlic pizza, Flocchini sausage and hot dogs made in Carson City and Sierra Meats burger meat.

Carson City's MJ's Sports Bar wins Battle of the Bars toy drive for Salvation Army

With an impressive 135 toys collected, MJ's Sports Bar in Carson City won the Battle of the Bars Toy Drive hosted by the Salvation Army. Crossroad's Lounge collected 79 new toys, placing second in the competition, with Ed's Doghouse collecting 63.

Saturday's Battle of the Bars Toy Drive to benefit Salvation Army Angel Tree program

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Christmas program will benefit from the third annual Battle of the Bars Toy Drive. Local bars and taverns have been collecting toys since late November and will push for a final count at 6 p.m. Saturday. Salvation Army officials will be “Bar Hopping” in the afternoon and evening picking up toys and thanking everyone for their support of this Toy Drive.

Senator Square: CHS students bring home top honors at speech and debate tourney

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Outdoors with Don Q final column: Thanks for the memories

As of Saturday, I am retiring as the Outdoor Editor for Carson Now and a very special outdoor photographer (my wife Elaine) will also be retiring.
It's been a great run, full of great memories, but sooner or later all good things must come to an end, and Oct. 31 is that special time for the two of us.

New Disclosure Forms, Created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Required on All Mortgages Starting in October

Beginning Oct. 3, most mortgage transactions will be required to be completed on new disclosure forms created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The new forms – the Loan Estimate and Closing Disclosure – have been designed to improve consumer understanding of the mortgage process sooner, assist consumers with comparison shopping, and prevent unexpected issues at the time of closing.
