Senator Square: Carson High teachers raffle personal items to help Paradise fire victims

CHS Social Studies teacher Angila Golik, along with teachers Curtis Kortemeier, Mike Malley and John Martin, and a few other teachers, wanting to help the fire victims in Paradise, Calif. have donated completed art pieces to be raffled among teachers and the Carson City community since many of them know someone affected by the fire.

Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute 2019 officially underway

Seventeen current and future leaders assembled at the Chamber on Thursday to begin their leadership journey.

National Honor Society President Eleanor Sturm made her opening remarks at the annual NHS induction ceremony Sept. 17 in the CHS Big Gym. Guest Speaker, Greater Nevada Credit Union Vice President Jenny Casselman then addressed the new NHS members and discussed what it means to be a part of such a fantastic organization and the responsibilities of being an NHS member.

Carson City Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament Winners

At Silver Oak Golf Course, the Brown Boys, Dale Brown, Nate Brown, Jose Del Real, and Steve McIntyre took top honors at the recent Carson City Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament, with a score of 44 in the scramble-format game.

Dawnyel Ray is New Branch Manager of Greater Nevada Credit Union’s Dayton Branch

Dawnyel Ray has been named the new Branch Manager of Greater Nevada Credit Union’s (GNCU) Dayton Branch located at 555 U.S. Highway 50 East, Dayton.

Ray joins GNCU with more than seven years of banking experience, including previous roles as an assistant branch manager and a personal banker. She also has six years of management experience within the car rental business.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to strengthen and grow our relationships in the Dayton community and to help my new team inspire one another,” Ray said.

Reno Aces finish baseball season in winning form

The Reno Aces finished their season in a game typical of most since the All-Star break: Pitcher Taylor Clarke was outstanding, shortstop Ildemaro Vargas received a standing ovation and the Aces were victorious.

The Aces defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes 8-3 at Greater Nevada Field, competing their eighth winning season in 10 years in the Biggest Little City. Reno finished with a 72-68 record, going 30-20 since the All-Star break. The Aces averaged more than 5,000 fans a game, and 4,186 turned out on a warm, sunny Monday Labor Day.

The Carson High School senior class of 2019 arose early, not an easy task for a high school student, to celebrate the rising of the sun on this their final year of high school. A tradition that began decades ago at CHS has seniors jumping out of bed still wearing their pajamas, grabbing their blankets, and heading off to the CHS football field to arrive by 6 a.m.

Rhiannon Hughey, 16, has always had an affection for geology, but now her hobby is out of this world. Hughey and her grandmother Patricia Hughey stopped by the Carson City Library on Thursday evening for a chance to see lunar rocks and soil during the Lunar Rocks and Meet a Meteorite presentation, sponsored by Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Vargas is a hitting machine for Reno Aces, streak up to 29

Shortstop Ildemaro Vargas holds the remaining streak for the Reno Aces.

Vargas’ ninth inning triple brought his hitting streak up to 29 games in a 13-3 loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Friday night at Greater Nevada Field. The loss snapped a season-high seven-game win streak for the Aces.

Querecuto goes deep, Reno Aces keep winning

Juniel Querecuto connected on his first home run with the Reno Aces in a 7-3 win over Tacoma on Wednesday at Greater Nevada Field. The Aces have won 10 out of their last 12 games.

Querecuto finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Nicknamed “JQ” has been a sparkplug since his call up from Double-A Jackson on June 8. He’s hitting .328 with 11 multi-hit games, and tied the Aces franchise record with five hits in a game on July 12.

Aces rally for dramatic 10-9 win over Tacoma

Kevin Cron’s two-run double in the eighth inning led the Reno Aces to a 10-9 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers on Tuesday at Greater Nevada Field

The red-hot Aces have won nine of their last 11 games.

The Aces tallied 14 hits including back-to-back homers from Rey Fuentes and Cesar Puello. Socrates Brito added two RBIs. Catcher Anthony Recker launched his 11th home run to left field. Cron finished with two doubles and two RBIs.

First-half report card: Reno Aces have been quite offensive

With an 8-2 win on Sunday, the Reno Aces ended the first half of their season on a high note, winning four out of five games against the Sacramento River Cats at Greater Nevada Field.

At the All-Star Break, Reno is 42-48, placing them third in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Conference.

Independence Day 2018: Fireworks, festivals and more in Carson City and the surrounding areas

A very happy Fourth of July to everyone. Listed below is my collection of celebrations in Northern Nevada. You’ll find them listed by their start time, so read through the list for all your options. If there is not a city/town listed after the location, then the event is happening in Carson City. Carson Valley doesn’t have a fireworks celebration, but they get the day off to a great start with a fun run, bbqs, concerts, and more. Be prepared for traffic if you want to watch at the lake, and a designated driver is suggested no matter where you end up. Have a safe holiday and enjoy.

There are several daytime events going on this week so grab the kids, your friends and family, and have a great Independence Day.

Aces’ Negron slices and dices on the diamond

Kristopher Negron is the Swiss Army Knife for the Reno Aces.

The do-it-all utility player is spotted all over Greater Nevada Field. Through 67 games, Negron has appeared in 34 at second base, 18 at third and a handful in right and center field. Negron’s place on the field may be unpredictable, but his .977 fielding percentage is a sure thing.

Greater Nevada Field isn’t your average Triple-A ballpark.

While the action takes place on the field, thousands of avid fans pack the park every game, bringing tons of energy and excitement and making their voices heard. On Saturday, Super Hero Night brought out 5,793 spectators in a 9-5 Aces loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers, Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
