Tattoo expo among events featured during Rockabilly Riot car show

With more than 50 booths featuring artists from across the West Coast, Rockabilly Riot’s Tattoo Expo this weekend in Carson City will highlight some of the region’s best ink.

“You’ll get a chance to be tattooed by someone you otherwise may not even know,” said Jeffery Williford, co-owner of the Ruby Lantern, which is sponsoring the expo. “Some of these guys have a waiting list of two to three weeks out. You have a better chance of actually seeing them here.”

Wind doesn't deter visitors to Carson City Airport Open House

Blustery Nevada winds tested the mettle of temporary shelters set up on the tarmac at the Carson City Airport's annual Open House event Saturday, but they did not deter a large crowd of morning visitors who came to partake in the festivities.

Aiming High: 2016 Carson City Airport Open House soars this Saturday

Aviation and aerospace displays, historic aircraft, formation fliers, hot air balloon rides, a pancake breakfast and more will be featured this Saturday at the Carson City Airport Open House.

With well over 6,000 visitors attending last year, this year’s event is expected will be bigger with a bevy of activities including interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, drone demonstrations, food and beverages, a bounce house and many family activities.

The Nevada State Fair returns to Carson City Thursday, June 9 and will occupy Mills Park until Sunday, June 12. Free to attend, the Fair features live music, carnival rides, a car show, County exhibits, civil war reenactments, and more. Free parking can be found at Carson High School.

Carson City teen wins state title at Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year competition

Autumn Cuellar, an 18-year-old Carson High School senior, earned the title of 2016 Nevada State Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year in Las Vegas Thursday, Feb. 18, competing against club members from Las Vegas, Mason Valley, Reno and Elko. Cuellar won the local Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada competition in January.

Carson tames Mustangs on the road, 59-43

The Carson High Senators won their second game against Damonte Ranch Friday night, 59-43, this time on the road in Reno.

The win keeps Carson undefeated and alone in first place atop the Sierra League boys basketball standings at 12-0. It is 10-5 overall this season.

The Senators had another slow start in the opening period, trailing Damonte Ranch 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. CHS, in fact, went into the locker room at the half behind by two points, 23-21.

CHS hosts annual Reflections Art Contest

Judging for the annual PTA Reflections Art Contest held at Carson High School began Thursday and runs through today.

The nationwide event, sponsored by the national Parent Teacher Association, is now in its 47th year and strives to “support student success and serve as a valuable tool for building strong partnerships in your school community,” according to the national PTA web site at www.pta.org.

Minnesota artist wins 2016 Nevada duck stamp contest

Minnesota wildlife artist Mark A. Thone has done well in the previous art contests he has entered, but after getting close several times and never winning, he was starting to wonder if it was ever going to happen. Well, he can stop wondering because Thone’s entry has been selected as the winner of this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest.

“My first reaction to your announcement of my selection as Nevada Duck Stamp winner was an ear to ear grin,” said Thone. “Then I played my poker face told my wife the news…As her face lit up, I admit to doing a little touchdown dance.”

The Art of Art and Wine

The support, enjoyment and participation in Wine and Art events is growing in Carson City.

It is evident with the opening of two new businesses that offer social gathering art classes and the enjoyment of adult libations, music and tasty tidbits. Both of these creative businesses have opened within two weeks of each other.

Nevada Day Beard Contest winners 2015

Sean Miller of Carson City took home Best Overall Beard at the annual Nevada Day beard contest Saturday following the parade.

Beard enthusiasts came from all over the state to compete in Carson City's annual tradition where there are 9 different categories. According to competition veterans this is one of the nation's best beard contests.

"I have been to the nationals and Sacramento's beard contest, but Carson City's gets bigger and better every year," said three-time Salt and Pepper division winner, Ken Swiff.

Oktoberfest, the yearly celebration of all things German, will have a taste of California on the shores of Lake Tahoe at Camp Richardson Historic Resort and Marina Oct. 3-4.

This popular annual event will feature German beers brewed here in the Golden State. Saint Archer Brewery of San Diego created a beer infused bratwurst exclusively for the event with its IPA. And another San Diego firm, Ballast Point’s Longfin Lager will be on pour.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.
