Nevada Day 150 celebration features new events, 'Steampunk Ball' and Famfest

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

"We at Nevada Day are very pleased to be adding three new events to this year's Nevada Day Celebration, in addition to bringing back reoccurring favorites," said Nevada Day committee president Ken Hamilton.

NV150 Fair in Carson City opens with free entry and nonstop entertainment

UPDATE: Thursday at 11 a.m., the Wells Fargo coach will be delivering Governor Brian Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and Wells Fargo Regional Manager Chad Osorno and Wells Fargo Northern Nevada Area Manager Sean French to Fuji Park in south Carson City to preside over the official opening and ribbon cutting of Carson City’s contribution to the NV150 Anniversary event, the NV150Fair.

The NV150Fair will feature over 90 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids from around the region showcasing their animals and farm knowledge.

Mad Hatter Garden Party with Corky Bennett Trio Aug. 1 at the Nevada Governor's Mansion

The 2014 Jazz and Beyond - Carson City Music Festival will open Friday, August 1 with a "Mad Hatter Garden Party" featuring music by the Corky Bennett Trio in the backyard of the Nevada Governor's Mansion.

The ticketed party features music, finger foods by Carson City Confections, wine, beer, and a raffle. Festivities run from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Carson City Visitors Bureau 'beat the heat' photo contest still open

There's still time to enter the "beat the heat" photo contest sponsored through the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

The contest is designed around summer visitors to Nevada's capital city and beating the heat. Participants have a chance to win lodging, dining and entertainment passes, rodeo tickets and more.

Carson City was recently recognized nationally as the fastest warming city in the United States. To remind the world that we do not live in a dry, barren, hot wasteland Visit Carson City is hosting a “Beat The Heat” photo contest on Facebook.

Nevada 150 events planned throughout July

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of July. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held July 1 through July 12.

Monthly swing dance party

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

Carson City Sheriff's Office hosts 11th motorcycle competition

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosted the eleventh annual Carson City Sheriff Motors Competition this previous Friday and Saturday right smack in the middle of Carson Street in Carson City. Along with the Motors Competition was the Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest. The duo of the events brought mass crowds of locals and even drew competitors from clear across the country.

Carson City scavenger hunt celebrates historic Nevada preservation and archaeology

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. To kick off the celebration, there will be a monthlong Historic Resources Commission Scavenger Hunt in Carson City and other events around northern Nevada.

Organizations and agencies have maintained a long tradition to promote history and spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad

An extra-curricular activity at Eagle Valley Middle School, 11 Carson City students prepared for three months at after school meetings and on their own to compete in the state Science Olympiad held March 8 in Las Vegas. The team is coached by Josh Billings, 8th grade science teacher with assistance from family and teachers.

WNC baseball team takes two to open series

The Western Nevada College baseball team turned turned two tight contests into victories with walk-off home runs on both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon in Carson City.

The Wildcats won 6-5 and 9-6 over Mount Hood Community College of Oregon. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at John L. Harvey Field beginning at noon.

Kit Carson Toastmasters Wins Area Speech Contests

Jim Klipp of Kit Carson Toastmasters in Carson City took top honors at both the International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest at the Area Level on March 8.

The International Speech Contests challenges each contestant to present their best five to seven minute speech. Each of the local clubs may select a representative to compete with the winner advancing to the next level. The finals will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Bonanza TV show fan club to hold Carson City conference in June

Fans from all over the world are attending the Bonanza Round Up which comes back to the Carson City, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City areas June 26-29. Some of the countries represented are England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, Chile and Canada to name a few.

"Bonanza" was one of the most popular TV westerns that aired from 1959 through 1973, and continues in reruns today. The "Bonanza" theme song is one of the most recognizable.

WNC Wildcats baseball grabs series from 10th-ranked Cochise

Western Nevada College became a different baseball club during the second week of the season, ironing out some issues on the mound and behind the plate. The result was capturing a 2-1 weekend series over 10th-Ranked Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz.

An all-ages group of nearly 200 set up camp Sunday night in front of the new Buffalo Wild Wings on South Carson Street in Carson City, each trying to be among the first 100 through the door at 11 a.m. Monday for the grand opening and chance to eat free wings for a year.

Soroptimist of Carson City host 12th Stroke to Help Fight Breast Cancer golf tournament

Signups are underway for the 12th annual Stroke to Help Fight Breast Cancer golf tournament, Saturday, Sept. 28 at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.

Hosted by Soroptimist International of Carson City, ASCE, Carson Tahoe Hospital and Tahoe Carson Radiology, the tournament features raffle prizes, contests, games, 2 hole-in-one prizes, closest to the pin and lowest and highest score prizes.

The cost is $85 and includes golf and cart, a continental breakfast and barbecue.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Nevada sportsbooks offer prop bet on unique double: Ernie Els at British, Dan Quinn at Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE — The possibility of Ernie Els and his part-time PGA Tour caddy, Dan Quinn, both winning their prominent golf tournaments on July 21 is a proposition bet in Nevada Sportsbooks this week.

Els will be defending his title at the 2013 British Open on the same weekend that Quinn, the former National Hockey League star, will be trying to repeat at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe.

July 4 fireworks spectacular over Carson City light up the night

It being July 1, that means winners for the June contest were picked today. The contest was easy. A number between 1 and 500 was selected prior to the launch of the contest. Entries had to guess what the number was to win.
