'Love and Other Drugs' is a twisted romantic comedy at the Galaxy Fandango
"Love & Other Drugs" is a sort of romantic comedy involving a drug salesman, Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) and an artist Maggie (Anne Hathaway) who is suffering from Parkinson's disease. It recalls that tear-jerker of yore, "Love Story," but doesn't go all the way. No cure but the couple walk off into the snow and to his Porsche Carrera rag top.
The movie is playing at Galaxy Fandango, located in the Casino Fandango, 4000 South Curry Street in Carson City. Click here for show times or call (775) 882-7469.
Jamie meets Maggie while posing as an intern with his doctor friend and gets a peek at a breast when she asks the doctor about a bruise there. Jamie tracks her down at her studio and they have a quickie as she doesn't want a relationship with her fate already mapped out with the disease.
Jamie becomes a big shot drug salesman and the two develop a relationship despite the shades of Parkinson's. At a drug promo in Chicago Jamie meets a man wed to a long suffered on Parkinson's who tells him how bad it gets for the healthy partner. Maggie meanwhile goes to a health fair where Parkinson's sufferers extol that life goes on. Jamie flees.
The stars are solid, with Gyllenhaal handsome as can be and Hathaway as lovely as ever and with her way of wringing a laugh out of the most flat lines. And yes, there is lots of nudity here of both stars, something new for Hathaway who has done fine work in most classical films.
A date movie? Depends on the aim of the date. But a confession: Hathaway is one lovely actress who can do more with a twist of her large lips than most can with a fanny twitch.
