Halloween in Carson City – How it works
For most everyone, October 31st is Halloween, pure and simple. In Carson City, it’s a little more complicated.
October 31st is also our state’s Admission Day, celebrated in Carson City with the Nevada Day Parade. Before the 1999 Legislature changed the state holiday to the last Friday in October, Nevada Day was always observed on the actual admission date.
That meant the parade, and a day off from school, could be on a Tuesday, a Sunday, or if we were lucky, a Friday. Trick or treating in the state capital was always the night before the parade. It just seemed safer and simpler that way.
With the creation of the three-day holiday weekend, the parade is always held on Saturday. Occasionally, that Saturday is also October 31. Only when ‘parade day’ and Halloween coincide does trick or treat night in Carson City default to the night before. Carson City is the only place that does this.
In short, trick or treat night this year is Tuesday, October 31, and that is when you’ll want to get in line at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion. Plenty of spooky decorations, great costumes, with a photo and something yummy from Governor Sandoval from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Enjoy the Downtown Business Association Candy Crawl and Safe Trick or Treating at the Carson Mall.
But the Halloween fun isn’t confined to just one night. Wednesday, Oct. 25, our local Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with the Carson Library to bring you the very first ‘BOO-nanza.’ From 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. you’ll enjoy trick-or treating and a family-friendly Haunted House in the Community Center and games and costume contests at the Library. Afterward, head to the Aquatic Center for a ‘Dive-in Movie.’
Monday, Oct. 30 features the annual Carson Tahoe Medical Center’s Spooktacular from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The free event includes trick-or-treating, prizes, and lots of fun for the little ones.
